BTW - why did Avid cause so much trouble? ... I have not had a lot of time to play around with it yet - and I can already tell that it is way more complicated than premiere, but - is there something I don't know? ... I mean, the way your talking about Avid you'd think it was the bubonic plague...

Hey Andrew--
PC software... the only other one seems to be Canopus Edius Broadcast, and I have zero experience with it although a lot of people on this board seem to be happy with it. I think they have a free 1-month demo or something like that, but I haven't looked into it. 'bena' there that did this show with me is a fanatical Mac user, and is trying to get me to cut on Final Cut. But I'm not going to be buying Mac hardware any time soon, so I too need a PC-solution. Too bad Adobe is asleep at the wheel. Avid is in a broken car. Final Cut Pro is on the wrong interstate. And I just don't know about Canopus.
As for doing an offline in Premiere--sounds like a bad idea. I suppose it could work. But I imagine it would be a lot more work that it was worth. My issues with Avid were that it took a while to even get it working; it involved rolling back my nVidia display drivers to an older version, as well as figuring out that stupid MXF issue that is simply a shortcoming of their help file. And generally I think the workflow is just archaic. It's excessively complicated for no good reason. I feel like they have this installed base of users that have figured out their crazy workflow making it an "industry standard" since the very beginning of non-linear editing. And although I'm sure that was a wicked great way of doing things over a decade ago, the interface to a lot of software has evolved for the better. But Avid doesn't want to change their "professional" editing paradigm for fear of alienating all the professionals that have invested so much time in learning it.
I mean, I'm not doing any fancy editing. Look at this show for example; it just fades in, has straight cuts, then fades out. I think that's the case for a lot of 'cinematic' work. Simplistic, elegant editing. So it's not that one editing app is more capable than another of doing that. It's just a matter of interface and workflow. I like the Premiere interface, I find it quick and easy and self-explanatory. And it integrates well with other Adobe apps. I once sat down and toyed with Vegas. Immediately, without reading any documentation, I was editing a video nicely together with some effects and audio and all. Totally painless. I've never personally used FCP, but I've heard great things, as well as Edius Broadcast. When I use Avid I feel like I'm some late 80s app. Where nothing is obvious. Every command has a mysterious keypress that needs digging through the manuals to figure out. Only out-dated video drivers will do. I feel like I'm using Bank Street Writer.

I had kinda hijacked my own thread to whine about Avid. But really I'm much more interested in hearing what everyone thinks of 'The World's Greatest Detective'. So thanks for interjecting spencer, I appreciate the compliment, as well as you getting things back on track.

Fun short. I wish the actress didn't smile so much, hehe. The fat guy was the funniest, I thought. Only if I could hear him better..
Here is a bit of CC (one and two) in Shake I did while a bit bored. Some Primatte keying, desaturation, defocusing, and film grain; you can almost automate the process.
Colour Corrected from the H.264 version.
EDIT: Here is a short render out of Shake. In this render, I defocused the whole shot, and then mixed it with the original footage to give it a bit of a blur film gives. Also, I decreased the final framerate to 21fps to give it a more vintage look.
I know.. Films shot on the film stock with such grain and unstable brightness would not be in CinemaScope, as it wasn't yet invented. But it still looks cool.

Yes, more due out. Detective Bilks stories as well as other sketches. I tried B&W. I thought it was kinda too much, and I ended up referencing some movies from circa 1960 to try to get that look. There's certainly no right or wrong on that though... Dmitry's wmv looks pretty cool there and it certainly could have gone either way for this skit.
Maybe from now on I'll just send the show to Dmitri for finishing.

And yeah - the black and white look I added is a bit too dramatic and dark for a comedy skit.
Generally, colour correction and compositing is a lot of fun for me, especially when working with HD and film scans. The problem is, there isn't much high res footage to work on for me, so.. If anyone would like me to help them out with their film, especially if you're in Vancouver - I'd be glad to do it.

Hemphililia that was great! I was literally rolling when he typed "girl who came into my office" in google search LOL....
It kinda had a Guy Ritchie "Snatch" feel during the train station scene...the gimmicky portly fellow with the hat was a good character. And the music was right on.
One thing I might have tried is more backlight in the office scene just to bring out more depth...a nice white outline woulda been cool lookin' especially for that late night at the office feel..not that it wasnt fantastic as is though! Really good stuff.

Oh ok, yeah heh if you shot the whole thing in 8hrs then yeah definitely not enough time for complex lighting setups

That was awesome! Great job, regardless of the time frame. I'll join the chorus of people advising against the film grain. I think that might work if you were using a 35mm adapter and had some DOF, but trying to layer a film effect onto shots that obviously aren't film (and I don't mean that in a bad way) just seems a bit incongruous. But I'm just being picky because you asked us to be.

I have a question, don't know if you've covered it on this post yet. As I'm thinking of getting an HVX, i'm still researching on shooting it on th ep2 card versus straight to tape. Which one did you use?

And yes, as 'bena' said, we shot on P2. Keep in mind that you HAVE to shoot P2 if you're shooting hi-def. And since we did this at 720p, that was the only way.
If I do a convincing job acting like someone completely enamored with the leggy woman, it's b/c I'm not acting; I have the biggest crush in the world on her. Shhhhh... don't tell. Thank goodness she (nor her boyfriend) doesn't read nerdy filmmaking boards, or I'd be terribly embarassed.
We're working on the next episode, but we had a false start. We shot some stuff that ended up being very-not-funny. So we're sparing the world that attempt, and starting over from scratch. But it's looking more promising on this subsequent attempt.
