Combining TM700 and HPX170 Footage

Dear All,

I am in production on a documentary in China and the primary camera is the HPX-170 (shooting 720/24PN with a frame rate of 23.98). But, due to the need to sometimes shoot more discreetly, we have brought in the TM700. For the TM700, we have been using the Digital Cinema Mode (which, I gather, is the TM700's non-native 24P embedded in 60i) and the frame rate, when transcoded to Final Cut Pro as ProRes 422 is 29.97.

Looking ahead to editing in FCP and to the final upres, I seek advice as to how we may limit the codec/format/frame-rate complications and make these two cameras work the best possible way together in production so that we don't have too many headaches in post-production. My technical questions are:

1) Given the pulldown of the Digital Cinema Mode for the TM700, should we shoot in 60P or 60i with the TM700 and do the conversion to 24P in post (I've never seen what post-production 24P conversions look like)

2) Is there a way to record in 23.98 with the TM700?

3) Alternatively, should we shoot in 29.97 frame rate with the HPX-170 and then apply a general 24P conversion to both kinds of camera footage once we pull them into in post-production?

4) One last question regarding the TM700: what is the best workflow to offload the footage using a Mac with FCP?

Any help or advice you may have to offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks advance.

John Paul
