F5: Colour Science

SPOILER ALERT: This post is about the FS5 mark II as compared to the FS7. Those who feel this topic has already been discussed and is a waste of their time may stop reading now. Please refrain from calling people trolls and mind your own business. Thank you.

BACK TO TOPIC:

We all hear great things about the FS5 mark II colour science. Sony has gone in and modeled the mark II color signs after the Venice. Prices have also gone up on the FS5 mark II. This brings it right back to a neck to neck comparison to the FS7 Mark I which has been criticised for its colour science. Can it now be said that at similar price the FS5 mark II could be a prefered choice over the FS7?

Answer.. No

And I suppose it is because 4:2:0 simply does not cut it no matter how you look at it.

Probably about 20 reasons the FS7 is preferable. Please refer to Doug Jensen's video comparing the FS7 and FS5 which was included in another of your threads. There's enough good info in it to watch it at least twice.

I know I shouldn't bother to post anything on this thread, but I want to clear up a misconception about the FS5 Mark II. I have no hands-on experience with that camera but when I was working for Sony at NAB I did have the chance to speak with the Japanese engineers and Sony USA sales support engineers who I've worked with extensively for the past 10 years or so. From what they told me, the FS5 Mark II only looks different from a FS5 Mark 1 when you first take it out of the box, turn it on,and start shooting with the Picture Profile turned off (or possibly with PP1, I cannot remember exactly) and make no other paint menu changes. Once you start customizing the picture profiles on a Mark II (and you'd be a fool not to) the camera is essentially no different than a Mark I. So all this talk about the Mark II looking like a Venice is only for the default, out-of-the-box look. If you're going to shoot with S-LOG or make any change other paint settings, you've lost that Venice look -- wahtever that even means. And therefore, it is completely safe for me to say, even though I have not used that camera, that any version of the FS7 is vastly superior to any version of the FS5 no matter how you want to compare them.

As Onset says.. there are quite few reasons.. 4K recording is a big one.. and I would think the "size" of lens you want to use.. each has its strengths but over all, personally, I dont think you will find many people who would say the fs5 is a preferred choice over the Fs7..unless the small size is a bit factor for a specific job .. but out of the box.. no..7 is more than 5.. :)
