4:2:2 is obviously superior to 4:2:0, but HVX vs EX1 for keying? EX1 wins hands down.
I did a test yesterday and allthough I don't have the images here to post, I can tell you right away that there really is no competition between the two. I tried Keylight, Primatte 4 and ultra keyer on fine hair detail, and the EX1 keyed so much better it's not even funny. I really did not expect the difference to be so noticable but the smeary "low-res" image from the HVX renders the 4:2:2 sampling worthless in comparison to the EX1 images.
BTW, higher chromasampling is most usefull in keying and keying-shots are mainly done in a studio. In such an environment attaching a sdi-cable to the camera is not much of a hindrance. You could easily build your own cheap recorder from pc parts and a capture card (Blackmagic intensity if you're on a budget).
As a camera salesman I have to agree with what Dean has said 100 per cent! We have so many customers coming in with predetermined biases picked up from reading websites and forums that sometimes you can't even get them to believe their own eyes! This is much more of a problem with still camera customers than video though!
It's also important to define your market and how your work is going to be presented. Some of the differences between these camera models (pixel resolution, CCD or CMOS etc. may not be noticeable to the client or may not be perceived in the format you are presenting.
We always encourage our customers to rent equipment they're interested in purchasing to see if it's really for them. Most pro shops will refund the rental fee if you purchase the item after the test, ora t least help you out with a proper in-store demo.
And to get back on topic, the feedback we have received here so far indicates the higher pixel resolution of the EX seems to outweigh the HVX's color space for keying. I don't know enough about it myself to comment personally.
BTW. Encuraging customers to rent to try? My dealer let me have the EX1 to try for a week! 4 Free... Still haven't decided i'm sticking with my HVX yet, but as far as keying goes, the EX1 wins.
We do refund a one day rental fee with purchase and we only charge one day for a weekend rental. If we were a bigger operation we could afford to have more cameras available for longer demos but we are just a little ol' family operation in Vancouver! :violin:
