Colors change when exporting out of FCP

Here's another wrench in the same system: I was working in a 1280x720 timeline. It worked fine.

I created a new timeline that's 1280x545, and it changes the gamma on playback. Same codec as before.

Animation is the only one that doesn't seem to change the colors.

I have been looking at the same scenario. Colors and gamma/contrast shift when export using quicktime. If you import your exported file back into FCP, it looks identical to the Canvas...regardless of export codec.....Hmmm...is this a FCP problem then?

It's a COMPUTER PROBLEM.

All apps handle video gamma curves differently.
There is no set universal gamma curve for computer monitors.

If you don't use a professional production monitor, you can't see the "real" raw image.
PERIOD.
That's what they're made for.
Hello?

The FCP Canvas is not accurate. Never has been. Wasn't designed to be. Avid's Program Monitor isn't either. They aren't designed to show you accurate color. Their job is to allow you do see what you are doing. As Ben and others have said, you need an EXTERNAL BROADCAST monitor...or darn good HDTV...connected via a capture card...in order to really see what you have. COMPUTER DISPLAYS aren't designed to show you video levels.

And, when you encode from a broadcast codec like ProRes to a non-broadcast format like H.264, or MPEG4...there will be a gamma shift. Always. Going to JPEG-2000....there shouldn't be. But again, you need to look at the comparisons on a BROADCAST MONITOR. Not your computer display. That cannot be calibrated to show proper video. Period.
