Colorista

There seems to be some pretty good buzz about Colorista, Magic Bullet's recently released color correction plug-in for FCP, After Effects, Motion, Avid, etc. It looks like it may well be an improvement over FCP's current 3-way CC, but I wonder whether this will continue to be the case once FCP 6 is released, given Apple's acquisition of Final Touch in October. Is Colorista enough better than FCP's tools that it is worth it to purchase it now (at what seems to be a pretty reasonable price of $199), even though the FCP color correction tools may well be significantly upgraded in the next version of FCP?

Just bought it this morning. If you need to do masks this tool is really great: it's a lot simpler than FCP...honestly the mask feature alone made it worth the money for me.

If Apple can integrate Silicon Color's tech into Final Cut by v6, GREAT. They are still actively developing Final Touch - 2.7b2 came out not too long ago. They are in a strange limbo state - you can't buy it or update your support contract, but you can get new versions as they develop them.

But when might FCS 6 ship? My guess is that since it won't be a free upgrade, Apple just needs to show it at NAB 2007, but doesn't have to ship it. I'm thinking a June ship date +/- a month, just based on the logistics of what I think they are up to.

I have zero inside info on this, just my conjecture.

In the meantime, Colorista is only $200, shipping and working NOW.

Even if just for one project, that cost justifies in a heartbeat.

One negative...although I like the software, their support team doesn't seem to respond to questions...too bad .

I am not sure how you can even compare a professional color grading software such as Silicon Color's to a $200 plug in??? Colorista is a simple plug-in for simple and quick color corrections. It is not a telecine/color grading solution whatsoever.

As a commercial film director...who does most of his work with the best colrists in the world, with the best hardware, and the most upto date telecine suites, I would say that this 200$ plug in is bloody amazing. We are quickly arriving to an age where it is possible to do some great post work at home. Obviously not having the colorist himself is the biggest drawback to the tool. And, as you may have noticed in my other posts...not having the screen to go with the rest is the real issue.

it's just a more logical system...and it's very easy to make power masks..

I hate doing advertising for these guys though...as they couldn't even take the time to answer two simple questions...

That sucks. I'll get to the bottom of it.

People used to say the same thing about Final Cut Pro.

I just installed the demo. Very disappointing.

First of all, the interface is so large I can only see one and a quarter color wheels and half the controls are not accessible. Almost like the Filter tab is zoomed into the controls way too much.

Second, the moment I drop it on any clip, VERY blatant and clear noise appears in my clips, like "sparkles" almost. Yes, even after rendering. And this happens on every clip I place it on. Tested in three different projects, on a dozen different clips, very consistant.

Really super disappointed. Had I just paid for it, I'd be really pissed off. Fortunately, I just got the demo, so I can just trash it and move on to products that work as advertised.

I've just resorted to building my special CC needs with Conduit.

With Colorista and it's "sparkles" on the left, untouched clip on right-

Here's what the interface looks like on my 30" Cinema Display, making it useless-

the sparkles went away with the real application...however I have the same problem with the color wheels...and that was the question I emailed to them, and they didn't answer. Never the less, don't underestimate what this application can do.

Sorry for hyjacking the thread, BenB how well do you like Conduit?

I am in the beginning of switching to FCP and one of the more interesting [and hopefully promising] aspects to that transition is Conduit.

I'm hoping it works well.
