Ok so i am outputting dvd which is ntsc. If I crush the blacks in AVID to where they look good on my computer and then burn the project to DVD, the blacks are to dark and the image has really wierd contrast.
How far are you guys crushing the black in avid and what are you exporting-601 or RGB?
Also, why does RGB in 1:1 mxf look good, but not 601? While 601 looks good in dvcprohd mxf, but not RGB?

I just spit out a QT refrnce (well after the bogus video mixdown)
This will retain your levels.

PAL and NTSC television use 16RGB to 235RGB while graphics use 0RGB to 255RGB. Making everything look good on the computer will and depending on encoder parameters the blacks will get even more crushed or set too high (milky blacks). If you color correct to broadcast standards (default for auto black and whites in Avid) then export a QT as 601, and the encoder does not touch levels, then your DVD will be correct.

Michaelp,
Thanks for the response, but the main problem that I am looking at is that (601 and RGB) AVID 1:1 and the (601 and RGB) AVID DVCprohd codecs show different color saturation and black/white outputs.
example: when I mixdown in dvcprohd codec in avid and then do a quicktime reference(601 or RGB) out to my dvd program, the mask (2:35:1) bars I rendered in avid are a milky black. When I mixdown in Avid 1:1 codec in avid and then do a quicktime reference(RGB only) out, my mask (2:35:1) bars are true black.
