HPX250: Color issues with my new HPX 250 (Yellow cast)

Yeah, something's definitely not right. Scrolling through the video, the shot of the birds against the clear sky background at the 8:50 mark was the clincher for me. The sky was blue-green, not blue. (I could point you to HPX250 videos that show beautiful blue skies, but I don't think it's necessary.) I don't know if it's an improper setting or a camera issue, but it needs investigation.

By any chance did you white balance the camera? I have noted that the standard configuration for 3.2K on the unit can appear odd on my camera. I go to white balance. The 5.6K is better. It would be nice if Panasonic gave us the ability to dial in our own white balance setting. Barry Green would be the best resource on this. Hopefully he will have a good answer.

I just watched your whole clip. Several times you held up a white sheet but it appeared gray. By any chance did you do your white balance in a shaded area? It is recommended that you do your white balance with a white balance card and set your Y-get up so that you can meter the card. The iris should be set so the reading from the Y-get target is 70. Select either white balance channel A or B, then hit the white balance. There is also a black balance that should be reset frequently.

Same here auto white don't trust it, balance first. Also what scene setting are you using?

Thanks for all the replys. I tried several scene files from Clean (which was the first one) to BBCHC, CineV, etc. I was using the white paper for notes to let me know the different scene settings I was testing. The camera looks better with a 5.2 setting, but still it just seem very off. I want to send it back to Panasonic but I bought the camera in the US and am now in Asia...and it would be terrible to send it to them and for them to tell me nothing is wrong with it.

Initialize to the Factory settings. Do a Black Balance, do a White Balance and see what you think. Trying to judge if its the camera or the scene file is tough. Go against a know quantity. Also you don' say what you are judging it on. If you are looking at an LCD, those tend to be more green to yellow unless you are looking at a color-grading level. And yes I am looking at it with my computer monitor and it looks a little yellow, but I know that really may not be true. On a plasma would be better.

Hope that helps,

Jan

Hi Jan,

Thank you very much for your message. I have done that, I did a factory set, white balance and black balance and it still is very very yellowish/greenish. Strange this however is when after white balancing... I go into the scene file, and I change the COLOR TEMP Bch to +4...it looks how it should be. Something is certainly off? Have you ever heard of this before? What do you suggest I do?

You didn't answer my other question which was what are you making your color call on? That is the VF the LCD on the Camera or a high quality monitor. Record something after a white balance and look at it on a good monitor, not just the LCD. If it looks different tune the Camera's LCD to look like the CC Monitor.

Best,

jan

Not meant as being critical of the op and new user, but this is almost certainly a workflow issue between white-black balance or the way the user is viewing or editing. The op never did describe his white-black balance procedure and would look at that first.

Suggest taking the camera with default settings and a basic scene file, plug it directly into a good and calibrated tv, or better a reference monitor and see what you get.

Hi Jan! Thank you very much for your continued correspondence on this chain!! I have looked at the colors on the LCD, on two different monitors and on my TV as well. All of which showed a very greenish/yellowish tint. I have not looked at it on a very expensive monitor, but am quite certain something is off. Is it possible to change the colors on the LCD. I could not find this function. If there is truly a color issue, what is the next step I can take? Do I send the camera to Panasonic? I have never experienced something like this.

I appreciate your critic. I have done a proper white balance and black balance. I have done a factory default. I have used a vectorscope as well, and the color on the scope are going towards greenish yellow. There is certainly something wrong.

I tried with many types of White Balance. AWB and then also the two other BCH and ACH. It starts looking more normal (still off) when I add +2 or +3 in the scene file for BCH but.... I don't think I should have to do this. It also looks better at 5.2 then at 5.6 but still is greenish.

Hi Grant! Do you know a way I can change the colors on my LCD screen on the camera to more accurately reflect what I am getting on my monitor? Do you suggest I sent it back to Panasonic or B&H? Unfortunately I purchased in December of 2013. It has had this issue from the first time I turned it on.

Hi,

If you have done all of this then you have no choice but to send to Panasonic. However as you say, you bought it in the US and that is where your free warranty service exists.

Best,

jan
