Color grade - feedback / fresh eyes

Hey Everyone,

Still relatively new with the F35. Still trying to figure out how to maximize the grade best I can / how far can it be pushed before it becomes distasteful. Would love some feedback from members that have ample experience grading the F35 ( in ACES if possible ) or just some feedback from fresh eyes. What you like / don't like or any tips of the sort. I'm trying to avoid luts and accomplish the grade in ACES. Using the latest version of resolve. I'm not opposed to using luts by any means but I'm also trying to move away from relying on them. I'm working with a novice editor who has a terrible computer lol the plan is to grade all the footage first as a first pass, give him all the footage in one long clip to cut up ( in a compressed format he can handle ), then give me the complete edit to tweak color if needed. Not ideal but it is what it is, I'm really trying to dial the look in now. As always with the F35 I'm really trying to push that high end classic cinematic look with personal taste of cooler / darker vibes. The screen grabs are what I have as the first pass now. I got involved in the project as a favor to a friend so dont judge the process 😋 Thanks!!

Can’t believe no one replied back to this. I think what you created here was and looked “intentional” I liked it a lot and you are doing a very good job with the f35. As long as the grade feels right for the story then it’s a perfect grade. Yesterday I did a grade where we wanted things to looks disgusting and it was an ugly grade, but it added so much to the story. I really appreciate you for sharing and hope you share some more or perhaps the finished project.

Cheers

I think you are on the right track with what you are doing. I don't like to use third party LUTS either. The color balance is very cool, but that is fine if it enhances the mood you are after. Values look very good to me for overall tonality and contrast. but you might play a bit with the curve in the dark values to see if you can bring out more a little texture and detail in deep shadow without losing overall contrast rather than let it all block up.

I'm using an LG 32" 4k 10 bit gaming monitor that has the same panel and display engine as their pro grading monitor but with less sophisticated software and probably not quite as even panel uniformity as the pro version. It looks quite good on the factory sRGB calibration and exports look substantially the same across a broad variety of different computer displays, mobile devices and consumer TV's for web videos or broadcast.

Looks good, colours look rich and skin tones look great. I am one of those perverts that like relatively lifted blacks, so your blacks look a bit too dark to me, but that's really just a very subjective preference (that is currently quite out of fashion).

Great frames!

Can you supply any higher quality frames that maybe we could play with? I'm sure this is way after the fact, but would still be fun.
