Color Correction Vegas Clip

A DVX clip of the Bride and Groom dancing. There is a moving split screen mask to show where the color correction is. It was done in Vegas. It's a 320x240 clip .wmv file.

Hint, the right side is the original footage. Posted just for those interested and for any helpful comments so I can get more out of CC'ing. I'm finding it's mostly trial and error and personal taste. :P I've only viewed this on an LCD screen.

PS: I know the lighting is terrible, but it's what was on at the time.

I personally wouldn't do a whole lot of CC to the clip. If you want a warmer feel just bring up your reds a tad and touch of contrast. The CC version you did was a bit saturated for my taste. My monitor is also not calibrated correctly so I could be off.

Re: Color Correction Vegas Clip

Color correction is very subjective so my opinions are just that, my opinions.

I have also never color corrected with Vegas; I am assuming that it has the standard primary color correction [RGB, contrast, saturation, etc]. My first impression is that although the original appeared to be a little washed out, it had more of a DVX100 look to it. The color corrected version looked more like video with too much chroma and crushed blacks.

Most people who begin experimenting with color correcting tend to “pump up the volume” which usually results in more of a video look. It appeared that you did not have much light so I did not notice any real hot spots; you can raise the pedestal a bit and then add a little contrast so that it does not look so washed out but you keep good shadow detail. You can add a little chroma, but that will give the impression that the grooms already been drinking a bit too much. Instead of adjusting chroma in RGB try correcting in YUV or if Vegas has secondary color correction you can try stretching the blacks and crushing the whites and giving you a little more latitude to adjust your levels.

Keep experimenting, it’s the best way to learn. It also might be a little more difficult to color correct using an LCD display – depending on how good it is.

Have fun

Hey SafetyO
I think the CC looks great. Maybe lower the saturation level a tad.
But really, it's a matter of personal opinion. Maybe show the married couple the picture and see what they say?

I ahve to agree; subjective

I too would desat just a tad; but I like leaning towards the warm over the original

Re: Color Correction Vegas Clip

Hmm. I like both. :-/

I think maybe for a wedding the corrected/warmer version would be appropriate. I also have a feeling that on a television or a DVD the color corrected footage would come out a little less dramatic and look a lot nicer.

Re: Color Correction Vegas Clip

I would say the footage on the left looks nice, a bit more contrast and depth, but your skin tones are off, and make the groom look sun burned. Its a good start but can use some more work.

Re: Color Correction Vegas Clip

Hey thanks for all the comments and suggestions! After out putting it to watch on my little Toshiba 14AF44 it was a bit saturated. (go figure)

Anyway, I ended up de-saturating it a bit from what I had done, and then just changed the contrast at bit, and it ended up with the look I wanted. It didn't look washed out or pumped up. I actually think that by just adjusting the brightness and contrast on the clip, the DVX color was fine all by itself and provided a nice look.

For IncMedia, I used the color corrector plugin in Vegas 5.
