Color Correction Tests

Hey guys,
We're about to start filming a short film... There is a long sequence in the woods, where a character will be held hostage, then runs away. Using 1/120 shutter, and we wanted to get a Saving Private Ryan / 21 gram look... Gritty, shaky, etc.

Here is just some test footage (we start filming next week) to see the location, and test the color correcting. Location is actually behind my school (senior in high school), in the woods and far behind the baseball fields.

Any suggestions are welcome.
Also, I like some of these grabs a lot better than others... Feel free to comment, because we will be changing a lot of the next couple of weeks, when we shoot with the real actors.

location / color test:

shutter test:

Premiere Pro 1.5, Magic Bullet, Brightness/Contrast...

the first one looks amazing!

maybe try 200 shutter speed for that SPR look... looks a little blurry on the last grab.. maybe post a clip?

Thanks for the comment man... Will try shooting at 1/250 as well... At first I thought it'd be too dark in the woods, but I ended up needing both ND filters on. I'll try a higher shutter as well.

I posted them, looked at them, and completely agree... I was going to stick with the subtle correction, however I really like the colors of the first one...

Here is another group of corrections, with more dramatic changes.

Comments encouraged!

Great color correction you ended up with here. Few people really see the importance of giving your pictures that extra layer, sadly.

Thanks for the responses... I was pretty happy with how these tests turned out, considered about 100 feet away from these woods is a school (not the best location for our movie)...

Young, I'm glad to hear the "Traffic" comment... Not about drugs, but a mafia kind of execution in the woods... Thats kind of the look I was going for.

We'll start filming this week, so I'll post some real grabs with the actors in a little bit.

Thanks

First grab is really great. I think the blue in artists costume is going to give u trouble to get that great look. (Unless and until u want him to stand out from the BG) Even in the second set of colour correction the blue is little jarring to my eye. Great work indeed.

I use Premiere Pro 1.5 to edit, but the plug-in Magic Bullet is what I used to create the coloring.

If you own the DVX100a, it should have came with a copy of Magic Bullet. If not, its available here:

Thanks for the comments though.

Can you get it as a direct Premiere Pro plug-in? Only seen it with AE.

The version I got free with my camera, has a plug-in for FCP, Premiere 1.5, Vegas, and AVID... I know there is an AE one too, but the one that came with the camera should work if you Premiere 1.5 Pro.
