Color Correction Plug-ins

You cant beat Rebel CC for a free preset.

Okay... I just checked out CC Toner for the first time, it's not a "CC" tool, per se, but a toner. You can turn your footage into a Duotone or Tritone. Interesting, but a very different tool from Rebel CC.

What is it you want to do?

(Thanks for pointing out CC Toner though. Looks kinda fun.)

Well, just like the big boys I want to color correct, I want my highlights a different shade than my shadows and midtones. Wouldn't you say that a toner, if used in moderation, can have the same effect as a color corrector? From my understanding of the toner, it seems to effect the same parts of the picture as Rebel would, shadows, midtones, highlights.

I'm sure you can get it to work for color correction, but you are essentially driving in a nail with a screwdriver. There are better suited tools for the job. You can do much more with just Levels and Hue.

Rebel CC is your tool; unless you have the dough for Colorista. Colorista with AE gives you almost all the power of DaVinci, but not in real time. That's alot of power. Rebel CC is nice, free alternative.

How do you know of Rebel CC? I haven't heard anyone mention it before.

I concur with Gage!

Rebel CC, I'm a proud owner of the DV Rebel's Handbook.

I guess I gravitate to CC Toner because if you adjust highlights your shadows don't inadvertantly get adjusted too, the science of cc'ing frustrates me a little bit

Magic Bullet Looks is amazing, but again, it's a different tool than Colorista. They work together, they dont replace one or the other.

I've found the latest Magic Bullet Looks to be buggy in both Avid and After Effects.

Rebel CC is very cool. I too have the Rebel Guide. Great book.

I'm afraid to buy Colorista though, because I found the new Magic Bullet (same company) to be so unstable. Note: the old Magic Bullet was very stable and runs without any problems.

What problems are you having with MBLooks in After Effects?

I've been running it in CS3 since during Beta testing and it has never even hiccuped. And I dont even have a crazy powerful system and my vid card is on the bottom end of just barely being compatible.

I'm curious to know what your problems are. And, BTW, Colorista should have none of the problems that MBL has for you, considering Colorista operates inside of AE, whereas MBL is an external app.

My problems seem to be that with a lot of layers in a 4K project in After Effects, the image gets seriously darkend (to almost a silhouette) on rendering. Note that this problem is only happening when I use the Look on an adjustment layer above the footage layer, and seems to have only occurred on these very large files (4K).

I'm running an nVidia Quadro FX 3500, so it's pretty high end graffics.

I was having trouble with MB crashing my Avid, but it seems to be better in Avid 2.8+ with the more recent nVidia drivers...but Avid isn't certified with the most recent drivers so...that's a bit of a bind.

...you have the full thre way CC of Colorista within MB Looks.
True. There is a 3-way CC in MBL, but not with all the power or function of Colorista. The first major difference is no keyframable powermasks in MBL.

Again, one does not replace the other.

Matter of opinion,

Dont take my word for it.
From the creator of both colorista and MBL:

Stu: Colorista is a color corrector, whereas Looks is designed to apply a cinematic look to color corrected footage. They are designed to work together. While Looks contains similar functionality to Colorista, you probably wouldn't want to use Looks to color correct, since it works in its own UI as opposed to right there in the host app.

Sean: Sorry to hear that. I have not done anything above 1080 so I have no experience with 4k, let alone 4k and MBL.

Have you discussed it with Red Giant? What did they have to say?
