Ellen DeGeneres Tapped to Host Oscars

Ellen DeGeneres has been tapped to host next year's Oscars, the Academy of Motions Pictures Arts and Sciences said Thursday.

It will be the comedian and TV talker's first time hosting the Oscars show and first appearance on the award show. She has hosted the Primetime Emmy Awards telecast twice and co-hosted it once, and hosted the Grammys twice.

"Ellen DeGeneres was born to host the Academy Awards," said producer Laura Ziskin in a statement. "I can already tell she is going to set the bar very high for herself and therefore for all of us involved in putting on the show. Now all we need is a lot of great movies."

The 79th Annual Academy Awards are scheduled to be broadcast live from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on ABC on Sunday, Feb. 25. This year's Oscarcast, in March, was fronted by "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart.

DeGeneres is the host of the syndicated talk show "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," which has won 15 Daytime Emmys since going on the air in 2003.

DeGeneres also starred in the ABC sitcom "Ellen," which aired between 1994 and 1998, and the CBS sitcom, "The Ellen Show," which ran 2001-2002. She has also been a regular in films and has authored several books.

"When Laura Ziskin called, I was thrilled," said DeGeneres in a statement. "There's two things I've always wanted to do in my life. One is to host the Oscars. The second is to get a call from Laura Ziskin. You can imagine that day's diary entry."

Nobody who attends the Oscars seems to have a sense of humor anyways, so I don't think it really matters.

Last year was such a waste of John Stuart's hilarity.
 
That's a horribly monstrously insanely bad idea...another reason to go to bed early that night.

Does anyone else think that Letterman was the best host ever!?

Billy Crystal, Bob Hope, Johnny Carson... those were some of the best
 
The world is degenerating. Ok, that was dumb but its funnier than anything you will hear that night. My guess is they will be using a laugh track. I have never heard anything remotely funny from her. And I agree with your list ravinesedge.

I really dont mind Ellen DeGeneres. She can be funny on her talk show, and made my laugh really hard in Finding Nemo.

John Stewart, IMHO, was really good.

Chris Rock was terrible (and that is in NO way prejudiced, he was just really bad)

Then again, the Oscars are dumb. The judges are old opinionated monsters that give the Oscar to the one with the director they like. Look at the Aardman movies. No way in the world was Curse of the Wererabbit better then Burton's Corpse Bride.
 
I don't get it. Ellen is actually funny. I want to see David Spade host the Oscars.

Ellen is the only stand-up comic I've seen who does HBO specials and doesn't feel that the F-word is great comedy. I don't think I've ever heard her say it. Lewis Black is hilarious but doesn't have faith in his talent so he relies on the F-word, Chris Rock is the same way. It's sad actually.

i have never laughed at anything Ellen has ever said... if someone is on her talk show that i'm interested in watching, then i'll just watch the interview and nothing else, and when she tries to crack a joke, i just sit there like "come on, you're wasting valuble interview time with **** that isnt even funny."

Seriously? Wow. Her stand up is funnier than a lot of new wave so called "comics". I still think David Spade is the person to go to.
