Color Correction on Da Vinci 2k

I recently had a music video color corrected on a Da Vinci, the odd thing was that once they laid it back to tape the pulldown was stripped from the tape. Would this be because of them having to bump it up to digi beta cause I did'nt have an EDL(it was edit on premiere pro 1, not 1.5) and then dubbing back down to mini DV. If I bring in a EDL next time and can be corrected straight from the original mini dv tape will that protect the pulldown?

Huh? That's weird. How would the davinci know what frame was a pull down and what frame was not, especially after an edit?!?

So you are saying it discarded your pull down frames? did it shorten your music video by 20%? What about the audio sync?

On an aside, how did the footage look trhu the DaVinci?

Well I will start off by saying if you have the budget for it Da vinci is the only way to go to finish your project.

No it didnt discard the frames but it stripped the cadence so when I brought it back to premiere for mpeg encoding the pulldown was gone.

Re: Color Correction on Da Vinci 2k

If there was no pulldown, did it just double frames? How did it lay the 24P onto the 60i tape?

Re: Color Correction on Da Vinci 2k

Im not really sure everything looked fine it was jsut a pain in trying to make a dvd of it

Re: Color Correction on Da Vinci 2k

I don't get what the problem was...if it played fine, then howcome there was a problem making the DVD of it?

Re: Color Correction on Da Vinci 2k

Premiere pro would not recognize the pulldown so I just had to make the dvd with the footage the way it was so it was 24 PA burnt to dvd and not the true 24. It did'nt look horrible but it was very agrivating.

Yeh it was really weird none of the guys at Filmworkers club could figure it out. We just gave up because of our deadline but I am hoping they will let me bring in some test footage this time with an edl so it all stays on mini so to see if it will all be ok.

Re: Color Correction on Da Vinci 2k

I think what happened is that the Da Vinci stripped the 24pA flag from your DV file. 24p or 60i video is recorded to the same NTSC standards (unless you're in PAL land), so NLE software that is capable of removing a 2:3 or 2:3:3:2 pulldown has to know if a file has been recorded with pulldown, and if so--which pulldown scheme. Normally, the DV file has a flag embedded by the camcorder that can be identified by *some* editing and compositing software.

When the colorist brought your file in da Vinci 2K either: A) The colorist didn't know the file had a 2:3:3:2 pulldown inserted and therefore didn't import the file properly, or B) The post house's version (or possibly all versions) of da Vinci 2K doesn't support SD 24pA.

So you need to either find some software that can reset the flags after da Vinci processing or (if possible) manually tell Premiere Pro that your source file has a 2:3:3:2 pulldown that needs to be removed. I work with Vegas, so I can't tell you if it can be accomplished manually in PP.
