Color correction in cam or via "looks"

Having a ball with my new HVX! Shooting some really sweet footage. My stuff is super fun high end radio control planes, Kitesurfing, windsurfing - no shortage of good light here in OZ.

I have been playing with some demo plug ins

I especially like magic bullet Looks for some easy grading (the interface is awesome)

(i am also trying to get my head around color but the interface is inelegant)

Looks is so easy and elegant to work with - but i know i can achieve alot in camera via the "money wheel" (the scene file dial) (thanks to Barry's DVDs)

The last thing i want to do is rob myself of some in camera black belt skills - I would imagine creating the look in camera gives the best fidelity.

I guess having the flexibility in post to create narrative with different looks from the same batch of filming is handy too.. love what they do in top gear and csi

Which way do most of you go?

Always always ALWAYS shoot the cleanest footage you can and color correct later. Doing it in the camera marries you to that look and if is wrong in any way, then you are stuck. MB LOoks will get you far more than the camera can.

I am loving the new "Looks" from Red Giant/MB. The interface is simple, but effective, and the tutorial videos help.

I would second Shane, unless you are crunched for time in post. Check out Barry's book and program a few looks in-camera and experiment with them before committing like Shane mentions "marrying yourself" to a certain look.

I always just achieve my primary look through white balance adjustments, iris level, and light placement.

Or grow a pair and make a decision you have to live with.

Kind of...

Post is great, but I would rather spend a week of test shoots and nail down my look in camera then spend a month in post "just because I can." I think that with DV people have become very lax with what their image looks like coming out of the camera because they can change it in post. Don't rob yourself of the skill to get it right in the first place.

William,

thats exactly my point - i dont want to rob myself of the skills to have 5 or 6 looks ready to go on the dial (so i'm not married to a particular look)

I'm thinking - ideally - you want the set up skill on the dial AS WELL as MB looks for some fast tweaking in post if required

amongst alot of cool stuff -There are Some great graduated exposure options in MB looks that let you go for a HIGH dynamic range look to the footage! i'm thinking its too good to miss!

Anyone use color out there?
