Color Correction Hell

Hey folks... Not sure if Technical is the place for this, but...

I'm having a hell of a time CCing some stuff.  I've got 16 year old VHS captured through an analog conversion box that looks like this:

FirstYear.jpg

The pic is a jpeg but if you r/click on the link you'll get the tif.

I'm not looking for it to be perfect, but I'd like it to be a lot closer than this.

Here's what I've got:

Final Cut Pro HD
After Effects 6 Pro
Boris Continuum Complete

Think anything there might help?  I'm looking for numbers please.... not just -- "ah yup... use the 3-way Captain."

I will except... "shift highlights toward blue..." or something like that.

Thanks

Re: Color Correction Hell

Just a 3 Way.

:D

I started off by using the Videscope to check the peaking levels. The original image was barely peaking at 70 IRE. I opened up the Brightness/Contrast and adjusted the brightness up (.10) till it touched 80 IRE. Then, I adjusted the Contrast up to (.20)

Then, I opened COLOR BALANCE and adjusted the RED to about (- 0.0685) and the GREEN to about (0.0395)

Then, I opended up the SECONDARY COLOR CORRECTOR and adjusted the SAT to (0.853).

You can then pla around with the Gain, Gamma, etc but pay special attenton to your Videoscope.

This is just my way; I have no idea the EXACT way to do it. Anyone else wanna chime in?

Ok... Thanks again. I've got a 'skin tone' line on one of my scopes. I've been trying to get that right by cropping in on just the face. Helps a bit... but I just can't get rid of that orange look... only gets 'better.'

Thanks

Re: Color Correction Hell

I got it looking a better now. Starting to understand the three-way. I also added 6bits of a sharpen filter too. Filled in some of the mush from the VHS loss.

Thanks again.
