Color Corrected Screen Grabs From Our DVX Feature

Below are some samples from our recently wrapped (last weekend) DVX100A feature, Feeding Grounds. A sort of dark comedy horror film shot mainly in the freezing desert of California.....

The below shot was taken at "Tragic Hour" with about 10 minutes of sun left and the Magic bullet was set for a warmer hue. I justed upped the hue a bit in FCP with the saturation key.

The others below have had some color correction and saturation/desaturation applied. I am only learning the color correction methods now, so these are not final but are attempts at the final look desired. We used several versions of the Magic Bullet during production.

just wondering, but is there any particular reason you refer  to it as "tragic hour" instead of  the familiar and common "magic hour" ?
the shots look good. magic bullet is a nice tool. the second one down and the last one are really nice .

Is that the hotel/gas station set outside Palmdale/Lancaster?

If it is they've always real high priced so good job if you got that location on your budget. Nice grabs, can't wait to see a clip or trailer.

At least out here in Hollywood Land, Magic Hour has become Tragic Hour by virtue of how much of a pain it can be to set up shots for a scant moment in the day that when a director/producer/whoever wants that light, it will sometimes take more than one day of attempting to get it. So, I think many a crew member have adopted it the new name of Tragic Hour for that reason.

The beauty of the video camera is that it is easier to set up and move. For that scene we set up 4 seperate "dolly" moves in the 15 minutes of needed light (our dolly was a board purchased from Home Depot and a camera cart with the camera and tripod on it). Same with the last picture of the girl and the red blanket. We had about 15 minutes of light and managed about 6 different camera set ups because of the ease of the camera. Granted, the may not all have been the best composed shots, but we got enough to choose from.

Were did you film it? What part of the freezing california desert?

The part of the desert that was freezing was Lancaster/Palmdale. We had maybe a couple days where the weather could actual support wearing a T-shirt for a few hours, but even during the day, it was absolutely cold, cold, cold. The actors were dressed as if it was summer and it was painful to watch sometimes. We managed to get the film "in the can" for just under 10 grand. We now have to tackle editing and post, but I may do the cut on my home system. I'd rather hire someone out for a credit and some points than do it myself as I am still learning FCP. But we have half a dozen people interested.

Yea, I'm from a town real close to that area. It does get friggggggin cold sometimes. And they call this the desert?! We actually are having a really cold winter in comparison to other years, and recently had a snowfall that hasn't been matched since 1972'. Good job on the clips though. Tim.

I don't care what it's about or what you charge to see it (within reason) if that sweetie in the last grab is in it, I'm there.

i am feeling the Motel sign. I knwo they are smaller than normal grabs, but still they are pretty noise free. especailly the one with the yellow mountains

Re: Color Corrected Screen Grabs From Our DVX Feat

Thanks for the posts. As I go through the footage and drop them into the computer, I am paying attention to what is looking good and what is not. We shot in 95% natural light so it was usually us and the mercy of Mother Nature. The pic of the mountains was done near noon and there was still this very cool fog at the foot of the mountains. The hue was a bluer one we used in camera but I am going to try and take it more to the hotter yellow in the pic for the final.

The pic below was used at 1000 shutter for the fight scenes and looked pretty damn good. The one with the guy and the crowbar was about 250 on the shutter and the one with the three girls was regular.

I made a small trailer based on some of the above clips but am using the Texas Chainsaw music for a temp and still waiting to get the rest of the video into the computer.

Re: Color Corrected Screen Grabs From Our DVX Feat

Thanks...That hotel was a run and grab as their location fees were about 1/3 our entire budget for the day. Spent about 10 minutes there all hand held. I have just started using the color corrector so all the caps are my first experiments with it. I haven't got the hang of it yet, but I hope to soon as I expect to have a rough edit by mid January of the film.

We did some very subtle in camera color work with the DVX since it was my first time doing it. While working with film, I always found that the camera filters were always helpfull than doing it 100% in post. Sometimes you just have to take the chances while shooting. I have a trailer that I will try and post but it is just a rough one that I put together from about 10 minutes of footage I have loaded on my comp and temp music.

Here is a shot that was taken in the dark. You can see, at least in this case, the night stuff reads much more like video in my opinion. I am sure there are more delicate ways to light to get a better effects, but of all our ten minutes of night stuff, I would say it read of digital the most of all.

Re: Color Corrected Screen Grabs From Our DVX Feat

The film is a dark comedy horror film about a group of friends that are traveling across the desert and find they have all been infected by "something" . As they grow sicker and sicker they begin to turn on each other and themselves as their minds go. But things get worse when they realize the "thing" that has infected them is also following them...

The script was written by a couple guys for a shoe string budget so we could focus more on the breakdown of the characters than anything else. We have one more pick up day after we get a rough cut of the film and realize what we are missing. If the film makes the investors a little money, they will jump right back on board to do another with more money so we are giving it the best treatment we can under the money constraints. But judging from my experinece with the market and these genre films, we should be okay.
