Color Charts

OK Guys,

I have looked at color checker Youtube videos, but they leave some things out I think. I'm wanting to know how to color balance a color chart that I have, to both the DVX200 and my 4k monitor. My monitor has been profiled when I first got it, using a Spyder 5 Elite, but, It's not too the color chart, which would make it not too the DVX200. I'm taking on a major project of editing, and I want my monitor to get as close to the Color-Chart and DVX200 as possible, knowing that I have some limitations of what my monitor can do.

It seems to be a (What-Comes-First, Chicken or the Egg Thing)

A little disclaimer, I'm not using a Xrite Color Checker. I have a Color chart that is similar to it, a Cheaper one, but still good quality, I think.

I'm all ears, in regards to this subject matter.:dankk2:

You would not want to calibrate a monitor based on a color chart, instead you would want to use calibration hardware/software.

My monitor is already calibrated to a Spyder 5 Elite, My thinking is If I can get the DVX200 to match the color chart, why would I not calibrate the monitor to match the Color Chart ?

Replying to quite an old topic, but I think the basic idea, is that you want to calibrate your monitor to display accurate color from a variety of sources across an entire gamut of colors, which is what your monitor calibration setup is designed to do. This should mean, that if you've corrected your footage to match the colors palette on your color chart in your footage to their expected color values from the real world, they should show up properly on your monitor without you doing any calibration of your monitor specific to your color chart. Further, a wide range of colors should be displaying the right color for the right color code, even if those colors are not addressed by your color chart. The types of adjustments available in manipulating video footage, are different than those available for video monitoring equipment. So you want to be able to start with accurate color from your color chart, possibly develop a look from there, and see all of it accurately on your properly calibrated monitor. I'd love corrections if there is something I'm not understanding correctly.

Thank you for the clarity on this. I have just done a new Monitor calibration, using a "Spyder Elite 5". I think I got it set correctly for brightness & contrast, for the existing room light that I use the monitor in. My monitor is a AMH-409U 40" 4K, using the Display-Port from my graphics card. On this latest calibration, to me, and my wife, we thought that the reds were to pinkish. So I went into the monitors menu and adjusted the HUE value to be more red, I also checked the white to make sure that that was not slanted towards red, then re-calibrated the monitor again, I think it looks the best it has in a while. Now that I have a color chart, I'm going to shoot some video using my favorite Scene file 4 on the DVX, and see how it looks on the newly calibrated monitor. I'll post what I find out after I shoot later this evening.

Thanks for your reply
