Color bars with Tone??

No, the DVX doesn't have a tone generator. You would either have to buy a seperate one, or create one in your NLE then record it to tape and playback on the DVX..

go to markertek or some other supplier and look for a pocket tone generator. its built into a XLR connector so it's small. About $40

I know in Vegas 4.0 you can render footage to tape with the color bars with the tone. If you downloaded a demo (I'm sure 5 and 6 still have the option, I'm not sure if you can render to tape with the demo) you could render some footage with the bars/tone to tape and then capture it again and use that bar/tone footage in your movie, presuming that's what you want to do.

Unless you plan to have your raw tapes dub over to another format, tone is not necessary on your digital raw footage tape. You should put bars and tone on the start of your final master tape (again in case the tape gets dub to BetaSP, film etc). 20 seconds of bars at head of tape is sufficient.

It's really just become a tradition from the analog days (when it was needed to match signal input to your editing format) that never died off.

Thanks for the feedback.

I started this project laying down bars but after hearing this and a simlar discussion on the CML, I will probably stop laying down the bars. Many thanks.
