Cold Weather Shooting

Hey Guys-

Over the past couple of days I've had a problem with tape dropouts because of operating in very cold temperatures. Today I found out the DVX manual doesn't recommend shooting below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Tomorrow I'm going to have to shoot outside and it's going to be in the teens. Personally, I look at the cold as a challenge. In some previous posts I've read about keeping hand warmers in the camera case. Is it safe for the camera to strap a hand warmer on the door beside the tape heads? If it is safe to apply hand warmers to the camera do you recommend any specific hand warmers?

Thank you for your time,

Hey thanks for the link Nick. If you need to keep your camera cold it makes a whole lot of sense to keep your car cold while traveling from location to location. As far as media, I think shooting digital stills on solid state flash memory cards outdoors is closer to shooting video on P2(solid state) cards.

If I strap a hand warmer on the tape door of the camera(DVX100B) should I put some fabric between the door and the hand warmer to keep the camera from overheating?

If you're buying a basic hand warmer from Quick Check or Walgreens I don't think one would have to use protective fabric because they don't get that hot.

My suggestion would be to test one and see how hot it gets. If it gets hot, then I would adhere a think piece of foam to the tape deck with double sided tape.

Another idea is to just wear cotton gloves and put the hand warmers on the back of your hand. Skin is thinner there so it would probably warm you better anyway.
