Cold weather filming problems

I've been recently filming a short film in the Canadian rockies where it can get as cold as -30 C and colder, but haven't shot on days any colder than -20.

I previously had an issue where I couldn't play back what I had just filmed. It was so there was a timecode screw up and it wasn't able to read the tape. The tape played back perfectly on my little canon handicam "deck".

Last night it was about -15 C. I was filming for a while and went to check if it was recording and couldn't get anything to play back (plays back as though it's a blank tape). I didn't have my canon camera with me so couldn't check it on that until I got home. What I had found was that what we had filmed earlier didn't play back on that camera either, however stuff we filmed later appears to playback fine.

There was no indication when recording that anything was wrong.

And it recorded fine later on in the evening.

Has anyone experienced this at all? And if so knows how to possible retrieve the info (if at all possible)? The footage isn't too critical so refilming isn't out of the question, however I don't want it to happen again!

ive experienced it one shooting outside around -20 Celcius ( or however thats spelled) and playing it back in the field it was blank, but played it back on the tv and the footage was there.

I have had the same problem, but i was shooting in +30 Celsius. i thought that the heat may've been a problem. i meant to get the camera serviced, but still have not gotten around to it. i thought it was a problem with the camera. do you guys both have the dvx100? or the newer one?

I have the 100A.

I currently live a long way from a service centre so may have to wait a while before getting it serviced.

In the mean time I may just use the record via firewire on another camera method. Anyone used this and had any issues?

the delay might be slightly annoying. Im assuming there is a delay?

and im using the 100b.

How so? I just did a quick test to record to the external camera only (only had 1 tape handy) and it seemed to record straight away after pressing record. If there's a few seconds before it starts I can always make sure I give plenty of header to the scene.

I was filiming with the 100b yesterday in outside in the cold and my lcd screen looked like i was using slow shutter but i wasnt i guess the screen was just getting too cold. Other than that it was ok. But it still freaked me out for a bit. i cant even imagine what other things it does when its that cold.
