COLD Weather camera freeze!

Just got back from shooting in Poland. Last day in Warsaw was cold and camera started acting up on the last scene (Thank G-d not the first day!) First had a message of dirty head..then wouldn't stop recording...then wouldn't start recording...It was about 40 degrees F, I would say...Next morning inside, the camera was fine...Is this from cold? Condensation? Any suggestions to prevent from happening next time I shoot in cold weather?

Re: COLD Weather camera freeze!

I think it is from the cold. I know that I was on a shoot in cold weather, and my footage was entirely dropout ridden after 7 hours of shooting :-/

40 degrees fahrenheit? That's not even freezing. I have had my camera out many times in those kinds of condtions without a hitch. Weird.

Re: COLD Weather camera freeze!

sounds like condensation ..although, like dijecta, ive had the cam out in below zero temps and 40 degree rainy drizzle alot and its worked fine for the hours i used it each time. but sometimes at about 40 condensation can become a real issue. thats a bad temp for condensation to be forming everywhere. cold enough to see you breath, but not cold enough for the humidity to drop from the air.   i would suggest wrapping the cam in a soft clean cloth or fabric that wont leave little hairs all over you lense and such .  then insid the cloth , you can put some small dried out sponges where they can absorb moitsture but wont get the cam wet.   condensation is a tricky thing. if your in a bind you can take it inside to a pretty warm place, and seal it in a plastic bag with a super dried out sponge. the sponge will suck the moisture out of the air and the dvx. but  its hard to operate with any sort of absorbant material around it outside on the set. .. i generaly put it in the bag when not in use, and keep some drying agents in the bag when im out on a day like that. ..its a tough situation and theres really not too much you can do to avoid humidity and freely operate the cam most of the time.

Re: COLD Weather camera freeze!

That is odd.. 40 degrees F is nothing. I've seen people use a PV GS70 in Barrow Alaska (just about the northern most tip) in frigid conditions with large wind chill factors and get footage just fine...
