Cokin Filter and Fader ND Educational Thread

Hey guys,
I have been trying to do some research on this and not having too much luck so I thought I would let you guys chime in on the matter. I am trying to figure out a cheaper alternative to a mattebox and filters for my 7d.
Here are my questions:
1. Do I need both Fader ND and the Cokin Filter System?
2. Is the mm size based on the lens that either would attach to?
3. If that is the case, does that mean you buy ND and Cokin System for each lens?

You'll want to get the largest filters that you can afford. Buy step-up rings to bridge the difference with your lenses. This way, you won't have buy ND/Cokin for each lens.

am i missing something? i mean $6... couldn't I just buy this and then get the HITECH filters, Lee filters, or Tiffen filters that are mentioned in the links above?

1) Cokin P series is an odd filter size. You won't find a lot of filters for it, other than Cokin. I don't know about Tiffen, but Lee filters are only 4x4 or 4x6. Cokin Z Pro is 4x4 and 4x6.

2) That product in that link is only for one filter thread diameter, which you can specify. The default is 67mm, as the listing indicates. If you have lenses that use different filter thread sizes (such as 52mm), you'll have to get step-up rings. So it won't be only $6. You can get step-up rings for as little as $4 each.
