GH2 Coffee spilled on Camera

Great. I get to start a boneheaded thread. My girlfriend knocked a cup of coffee right into the open drawers where my gh2 was sitting in. I thought we got off lucky, thinking nothing really got damaged. For the most part, this is true, except some coffee got on in the power switch, under the mode dial. Assumingly, the sugar has made it pretty sticky. At first, it wasn't too bad, but then left my gh2 alone a few days and the coffee has hardened, making it damn hard to turn the camera on. I can still do it, but it is torquing the crap out of the flimsy switch. I figure it's only a matter of time before the power switch snaps right off due to all the friction it's getting. A wet cotton swab helps moisten the area to the point of non-issue, however, once it dries, the problem remains. I think it's clear I need to get this camera open and clean out underneath these switches. Anyone have any advice, suggestions or info on how to do this? Thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear that, I would suggest sending it in to panisonic. I think thats going to be your best bet. If you take it apart, and screw something up, your still gonna have to send it in regardless. If your good with taking things apart, then thats a different story. I just know I would screw it up worse:)

You can find the service manual that'll tell you how to take it apart. Just search for GH2 Service Manual.

Thanks Keylight! Wish me luck.

Put your camera upside down over a pot with steaming water. If you place a grill on top of it you can even rest your camera. Be careful not to put to much water in the pot. The vapors from the pot will blow steam up into the camera and possibly help with your problem.

I would only do this for 5-10 mins maximum and be very careful. If you even have the slightest feeling that your camera will be damaged then stop, I think the vapors though will be good. At least worth a try.

Success! Taking it apart wasn't too too bad. I did lose the on/off switch's ball bearing though. Luckily, the mode dial has two ball bearings so I used one of those. Now the mode dial is slightly looser to turn, but still has good friction. I think I actually prefer it. Cleaned all the stickiness out. Man, this GH2 is rackin up its...experience. Thanks for all the chime-in's!

good God! what does she sweeten her coffee with? molasses?

i wouldnt worry about it. id assume that with use, the stickyness will eventually break down. unless its reacting with some internal material...
