F35: Codex Recorder

With my current work situtation I am not shooting as much with my F35 recently. I have put my kit up for sale here and other places but in the mean time if there is anyone here who is interested using a Codex with their F35 mine is available most of the time. I should have everything you would need to use it with your F35 and enough storage for over 3 hours of uncompressed 12bit 444. Kit is located in Denver, Colorado.

Hi!

I haven't introduced myself here but i have been reading the F35 threads since a few years back, always looking at all the clever things the community here have come up with. I am working with small Commercials, Music videos, indie films and other stuff, Located in Sweden. I have had the F35 camera since early 2015 and been shooting it with the hyperdeck and Odyssey. Mostly been using other cameras ( the red´s, Arri´s, and smaller sony´s) as per the Client/Director´s request. But my F35 is always the reliable Backup and my personal "Off Work" Hobby.

I Just Bought the Codex kit that was up here on the forums recently, and I am wondering about a few things:

* Cant get it adapt the settings from the camera as i have to invidually change both to match. (maybe thats how it should work?)

* the 50fps is only available as "1080p" option, not the 1080psf as its limited to 30fps in both 10-bit and 12-bit.

* i think all the License options is there (Dual, HD, ARRIRAW, Multi, CANONRAW)

wondering if you guys that have used the codex/F35 combo, have some good tips and basic guidelines for setting this up to be at maximum compatibility.

Cheers From Sweden!

You have to individually change both, the only communication between the F35 and Codex is record trigger. Also there is no way to review playback of the Codex in the F35 viewfinder either. Also there is a annoyance with 12bit on the Codex. If you want to switch the F35 to 12 bit from 10 bit you must do so with the Codex undocked from the F35. The F35 recognizes the Codex as a VTR but since no 12 VTR was ever released by Sony the F35 assumes that the attached VTR doesn't support 12 bit and won't allow you to switch it. In addition to that once in 12 bit you will get a Unsupported Format warning showing up in the viewfinder. I never found a workaround for that.

Are you referring to the Codex or F35? I know there is a 1080 50P 444 option that works with the codex. For a time I just left the F35 and Codex in 10 bit 50p select FPS mode so I could just switch to whatever frame rate I wanted when ever I wanted.

* i think all the License options is there (Dual, HD, ARRIRAW, Multi, CANONRAW) There should be a menu on the Codex to see what the installed licenses are, I don't remember and unfortunately the documentation for all the Codex stuff really is lacking. I don't believe there are any additional licenses require to record from the F35 though.

Great! then i know there is only the record trigger in the communication, and not something i miss out on, as the record trigger works most of the time. it has sometimes stopped record after a few seconds when using the camera record button, but always works when triggered on codex.

i refer to the 1080p and 1080sf option on the codex, as i am switching between 1080sf(I wrote psf but its just "sf") for the 25 fps and the switch to the non "sf". if i have it on 1080p on the codex for 25fps (from camera) then it says "Input A wrong type:1080sF@25.00" is the camera then sending out 2 different formats?

what is the "select FPS mode" you are refering to?

i have noticed a thing with the playback, i can get a good playback at normal speeds, but when recorded in 50p the playback looks like realtime speed at the default TC rate (presume its at 50fps playback), and looks choppy at 25, not as 50p in 25fps would look like, but more like 25p at 12.5 fps

its the same if i try to do a ramp with the camera, the payback from the clip recorded just gets choppy when ramping down from 25 to 8fps and seems to multiply the frames between instead of getting less frames.

I have been messing with the settings back and forth and i think i figured it out now,

when i switched the Timecode setting from TCG to LTC it does present the TC as just a bunch of 000... but when i record, and look at the playback it does play at the correct speed now, and ramping works fine, everything play at the correct interpret speed.

I found the "select fps mode", have completely forgot about it as i never had any use for it before, i just used the 8 different format options i had set beforehand. but now it feels quite logical to use it with the codex. I set the camera and codex at the same 10-bit format, and i just change the FPS on the camera, and have playback on codex locked at 25.

Everything works now, but i know i dont have any thing plugged to the LTC port at the back even as i set it to LTC, so the codex does not use the timecode now?
i noticed that the camera still have its TCG on the sidepanel, but does that go through the embedded so that is what the codex is interpreting and using to get the right frames?

i have not set up my transfer station yet, so haven't looked at the files in post.

Great to hear you got it all working. The F35 doesn't generate its own time code and the Codex cannot send that data to the F35 only the srw-1 can do that. So the time code on the side of the F35 won't ever update, just make sure that the Codex is generating its own time code and everything will be fine.

I don't recall what the option is but there is an option to have the Codex generate its own time code so I would use that. The way the select fps and speed ramping works is the F35 always sends a 50p signal with duplicate frames as needed, when ever a new unique frame is sent from the F35 it sends a code in the sdi stream that lets the Codex know that it is a new frame so the Codex records it and ignores the duplicate frames that don't have that signal.

Getting the transfer station set up is not too difficult but you will need to contact Codex and get licenses for it. Your Codex comes with them so you don't need to pay. One thing to watch out for though is to request the DTS 3.0 software not the production suite. The DTS software is discontinued but you can still get and you will get licenses to unlock all the export options. You can also use the production suite but you only get a basic license which is only dpx export, requiring you to purchase a license if you want to export to ProRes for example. Licenses are $750 if I recall correctly. The documentation is really poor so be prepared to spend some time experimentingI and learning.
