Codec Management Techniques?

Yup, I'm a DV newbie- I'm wondering what techniques, automated or manual, people employ to manage codecs?

Just as in the days of yore (1999) when we had to selectively install fonts, we now avoid running too many codecs consecutively in order to maximize computer performance.

Are there any codec management programs analogous to Extensis Font Reserve?

Since I reside in both the Mac & PC worlds, I'm interested in programs for both.

You can have as many codecs installed as you want. No performance hits in any way.

But, you need to decide which you'll use in a project and stick with it. Even though most editors will tolerate a mixed timeline, you'll usually get best results from transcoding everything to one codec.
