Closed Captioning

I know there are several threads relating to closed captioning but none of them answer my questions.

I work for a television show here in CA. We shoot SD to DVCAM and edit w/ FCP. We then send out our masters to another company to get closed captioned. They then send us a DVCAM tape back which has the CC data on it (Line 21).

Now at NAB I spoke with some people from AJA and they claimed that CC data was only retained in uncompressed (8 or 10bit) streams. This would make sense to me but the captioning company has been sending us DVCAM tapes. I was under the impression that uncompressed could not be layed off to standard DV or DVCAM tapes. The stations that play our episodes are able to read the CC data and it displays properly.

Does this mean Line 21 data can be retained in other formats?? Furthermore, If i ingest footage as uncompressed through a KONA card will it play nicely with FCP???

thanks in advance guys

Sorry I don't have an answer to your question, but I have a question for you...
How much does it cost to have your CC done and who's doing it?

I'll have a need to do that sometime soon. Thanks

Perhaps they mean once it goes through FCP. In my experience once you capture DV into FCP any captioning disappears.

Captioning has nothing to do with codecs, it's the signal flow. They are outputting your material via SDI to one of the higher end DVCAM decks that featured SDI i/o like the DSR-1500.

thanks dan, so am I correct in assuming that CC can be included on various tape formats as long as SDI (or analog) is used for output? Knowing this, how could one retain this information when capturing??

I used to work in Burbank about a block from one of the big captioning companies at the corner of Main and Alameda. I would call them and clarify, I am not sure at all if the signal passes cleanly through analog dubs.

As far as capturing, all an SDI capture is is a file transfer, no different than copying a file off of a DVD or CD so I cannot see why it would not capture with the line 21 info intact. But I would talk to the experts on this subject, I don't know much more about it than you.

Thanks again for the info Dan. It's probably the same captioning company actually, National Captioning Institute in Burbank. I'll give them a call and see what they have to say.

No idea, NCI can give you a quote from their website @ ncicap.org depending on the type of project you're doing.
