ClipWrap OSX workflow & bitrates

Now that I have the GH2 I have to fond a proper workflow that includes archiving with meta data and selective transcoding for editing. I found ClipWrap was a useful app, you can just rewrap AVCHD to Quicktime without blowing up the file size too much. (good for archiving) Wit Aperture 3 I can archive the footage and select which (parts of) clips I want to transcode to ProRes so I can edit in Final Cut.

So far so good. I have noticed that the rewrapped quicktime files from ClipWrap have different bitrates when I check that in Quicktime App. While the mts files are supposed to have 24Mbit some rewrapped files only have 11Mbit, others 24... :undecided:

I ask myself if there is any loss when rewrapping with ClipWrap, any ideas?

Thanks, Bern

Clipware has notbworked properly with the GH1 due to Pannie not settng pulldown flags properly in 24p in 60i streams. Was wnderingbhow it would work with the GH2's 24pn stream. sounds like it works.

About your question 24Mb is the max encoding rate, the rate is variable according to the detail in the scene. it is normal to have lower encoding rates when set to 24Mb, but 11Mb does sound a bit on the low side.

thank u philip! I thought the bitrate was depending on detail but I didn't expect these huge differences.. the 11Mb footage is an interview shot on a tripod and the 24Mb stuff is shot handheld.. ;)

Seems to work fine. GH2 uses VBR and 24Mbps is maximum bitrate, will only hit 24Mbps average bitrate sometimes. The problem with using ClipWrap is that you're still working with Long-GOP files in your NLE. You should be using an I-frame codec for best quality and fastest speed. Takes more HDD space though.

yes, Ben.. it's not for editing. But it's good for archiving with Aperture 3. I've always been looking for an archiving workflow like for still images.... Lightroom, Aperture... these apps don't work with mts files but with rewrapped movs they do. With Aperture you can even watch the videos within the app. There I can chose the "cream" and transcode to ProRes for editing.
