These look fantastic, but I'm not sure such a product would be as revolutionary as everyone is saying it would be. The projected price point is $15,000 for 720p with 1 ccd, but JVC has a camera coming out for $20,000 with 3 of Altisen's best 2/3'' CCDs which records 24p/1080 allegedly. If it weren't HDV, I'd say it would seem to offer a better deal for the money given what is known about it. Rumor has it it will record at 50mbps which would definitely be acceptable (and a LOT easier to work with than still images.)

Still, those videos were amazing. It's too bad that some major company doesn't come out with a cheap 24p/1080 "film-making" camera with a single big ccd. I guess they can't find a way to cripple it so it doesn't compete with the likes of the Varicam and CineAlta.

Actually the 1080p 1cmos (not CCD) cameras are planned to go for around 4-5K once fully developed.

This is what i believe as well. Many years ago there were many 8-super8mm-16mm and 35mm camera makers in the world. As these off the shelve cmos like Altasens, Micron etc rise to surface small companies will build camera system around and use memory card or Hard drives for capture. We will all benefit in the long run.

wow! that looks pretty good. This is like a drug and I'm addicted to it. Anyone knows how much the Obin camera cost to make? Thanks for the link fix mikealoaf.

Yeah, i'm getting excited about all the end-user development that's going on. Home made HD cams, vipers, etc. Looks like in a year or two we might have some good things available to the avergage person.

Indeed! These will let indie filmmakers compete with the big guys for a mere fraction of the cost. Heck we're talking about getting footage that has more potential than what Lucas shot episode I and II with!

I suspect that the big guys will move on the 35mm size multiple chip cameras with approx 12mp but darn, this is great! I do wonder though... how will these companies respond? In any case big changes in the realm of cinema are just around the corner :)

It is indeed very exciting news! Just a couple of months ago I was planning on shooting on 35mm but when I heard of people making these literally homemade HD cameras cheap compared to the Viper,cinealta with a 100k plus pricetag. I'm beyond excited that I might in a year or so be able to get my hands on one of these things. OMG, 100k +for a camera? You can buy 4 milion dollar mansions in Cambodia for that price.

I checked out www.dv3productions.com website and was their demo reel shot using this camera or was that digibeta? I wish I could get all my MIT & ITT buddies together and get them to build a Super HD cam.

Does Lucas & Rodrequiz know about this?

If not I'm sure they will hear about it within the next year or two :D. What I wouldn't give to get my hands on Obins 1080p 12bit camera right now... especially if/when it becomes a fully contained unit (no computer necessary).

I honestly don't know what their demo reel was shot with. I'm guessing it wasn't this camera as it just barely became functional enough to record the data stream.

Supposedly the German guys who made the 720p camera that was posted about earlier are working on a camera with a full 35mm size chip which they plan on producing and selling. I have yet to hear anything official yet but that's the rumor.

Rodrequiz maybe.  But Lucas all he'll look is stuff from the top of the line.  I hope that these cameras can and will out perform the Cinealtas and the Varicams.  But I'm afraid until ala Blair Witch or a Big Fat Wedding comes along made with one thse cameras the studios won't look at them.   But then again that might be good for us.  It'll keep the price down.

Ai yes. I don't really expect the big guys to use these cameras. I think they may eventually become aware of their existence when people start coming out with some good stuff but I suspect they will always stick with Panasonic and Sony.

Both the Cinealta and varicam are compressed, I believe. Not much but they are compressed. These are completely uncompressed 4:4:4 cameras :D. A colorists dream ;)
