Owen, Great stuff! I love that you decided to make something wholesome that everyone can enjoy. Your very driven and extemely professional, how old are you!?

Owen, sorry if you covered this, but did you use any polarizers for the lenses.

I used a 4x4 Lee circular polarizer. I also used a Tiffen ND grad when necessary. That was the extent of my filter budget.

...please, give us better trailers! Quicktime is capable of so much more than these tiny postage stamp trailers!

I admit I only set one weekend aside a while back to design the web site and stick trailers on there. I'm currently using the free version of Sorenson Squeeze that came with Avid. I've not really had time to dig into the export settings within Avid itself when dealing with the trailers -- any advice on settings? (The LARGE option in the Sorenson Squeeze version I've got results in quite a large trailer that hogs a lot of bandwidth).

I'll tinker with it and update my original posts with links to bigger files as soon as possible.

Thanks! I'm 25.

Wow, some very impressive stuff. I may have missed this, but you say that this series is based on a series of books, how did you get the rights to the books? Were they public domain or did you work a deal with the publisher/author?

Again very good job.

Thanks! The books are still under copyright (written from 1940 - 1970) so I had to deal directly with the publisher.

How was that experience? Did you negotiate a fee plus percentage or what?

If I am being too noisy tell me.

I m really impressed

I m really impressed

Hi Owen,

Your work is definitely really impressing and not just on a technical side which is obviously awesome when you think it s from DV(even though it s the dvx) but also in term of actor direction. I really mean it, even in the trailer the young kids seem to really know what they re supposed to do which IMO give the real nice professionnal look of the rest. I m truly impress and even though i m totally broke(...studying, paying for it, and trying to continue producing documentary), i will definitely try to get the DVD's.

Thank to share your work with us and keep it up.

Phil

It wasn't the easiest thing to do, but I've been told by others that my experience went more smoothly than most. It took longer to secure the rights than it did to shoot the movies.

The first two are available through cheaper avenues: Movie Gallery rental stores, Netflix, Blockbuster.com... depending on where you live some libraries carry them as well. The good old Sugar Creek Gang doesn't want to be a burden on the indy filmmaker's wallet!

Owen. Hey! I just recieved "The Swamp Robber" in the mail the other day. I am really impressed with what you were able to achieve. My son really liked it as well. He has already watched it a couple of times. We want to get the following episodes, but need to spread the spending out a bit. Can't wait to see them!!!

And THAT is what makes this particular project worth it. The target audience has reacted very favorably. Thanks for checking out the movie!

Owen -

Indeed ... you are a timelord. the translation to film is very good. you have a wonderful eye for composition, the sound is dead on and the editing is top notch. you've managed to capture the period in quite an authentic fashion giving the work a very organic feeling. Bravo ... on a job well done. I look forward to more of your work.

Aww shucks. Thanks Mikel -- you have quite the knack for making quote-worthy comments! But (veering off topic) haven't you heard? As of season 27 "The Doctor" is truly the last remaining timelord!

I've seen one of your trailers, Owen and I like it very much.

It's said that one can't work well under low ligth and the anamorphic adapter (we have to set a high f number) but after watching your trailer I can see you've achieved some great low light footage...

And what about DOF? were you concerned about getting a shallow DOF? (They say this adapter gives a deep DOF

Thank you for your reply and congratulations!!

"Impressionnant" for a first project, well "félicitations". It is not just well done technically, but the story, casting, props and the actor direction is very nice too. it's a really good start in the movie world.

Owen,
Just watched them all. Fantastic work ole chap. It looks great. I thought your young actors were spot on. I loved what you did with it man. I think you nailed it in movie Three. It just sums up the series. The best of luck with your adventure.
J.P.

Y'all're makin' me blush.
I guess this thread got resurrected in the shuffling around of the clips forum.

Kuock -- low light with that adapter is a bit challenging, but do-able. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a couple of HMI's for a few night scenes, so that of course helped. Sometimes it just 'looks' like there was low light. As for DOF, I just had to accept the fact that it probably wasn't gonna happen (or that it was going to happen far too much depending on how you look at it). There were times when things fell into place, but not many. Whenever possible I'd open up, pop on the ND, take a few steps back, go telephoto, and just take what I could get. The g35/mini35/etc's definitely have my attention.

Shadow -- I'm speechless. Positive feedback and constructive criticism of the type I'm getting on this forum (folks who KNOW what they're talking about) is most encouraging.

JP -- You "watched them all" as in the movies or the trailers? (just wondering since you're located in "the zone" and there are very few copies that have been shipped to "the zone" that I'm aware of) btw, I watched all the heroes4hire clips a while back. One complaint. Give us more! I particularly enjoyed the interrogation.

Owen,
Just the trailers...Im sure you will run with this project. Its commercial. Tech/ Direction heavy dealing with a mass appeal subject matter. Plus it looks likes it was fun to shoot.

I have had to hold-back on Heroes as my system has been filled with bread/butter work. I intend to finish it up (its turning more into a film than the original 30mins) very soon. The rest of the actors are waiting for me to record dvd extra commentery. Ive shot everything and Ive saved all the best bits for the finished film. Just need to get my ass into gear.
Thanks for your support. The interrogation was the first scene to be shot. Im glad you like my acting/ direction/ story chops....wow I amaze myself

Great stuff!
Your production value is reall first rate.
I like the themes of all the films

Sort of reminds me of "Ann of green gables" or "Stand by Me"

Really think you are on to something

great Work!
