FS5: Clip name management?

So we recently added a FS5 to our setup at work and it seems like I missed out on the fact you cant rename clips like you can in the FS7 which is needless to say a pain. Also I must be missing it in the menu but how do you reset the clip number? Also is there an easy way to rename all the clips at once after a shoot when we transfer footage to the computer?

EditReady lets you rename clips as you import. This is the easiest way.

It is also easy to rename in FCPX, and OS X has a nice batch renaming function as well. These are both a bit of a pain but work if you are familiar with the OS and the App.

I really wish the FS5 gets a FW upgrade with clip naming, it would be the best solution.

I would caution people about modifying clip names after you have made any backups or archives -- unless you change all of them. Personally, I find it very important that every copy of a clip in my system has the exact same name and is saved in the original file structure (a clone of the card itself). Having different names for the same file in different places is not very efficient and possibly a recipe for disaster.

I've been using EditReady myself, as I like to be able to grab files and use them in other projects or hand to people (I use FCPx). I don't like that every time I format a card the clip names start all over, only they start with "Clip0002" rather than "Clip0001". So I just drag the whole private folder onto my hard drive, use EditReady to add a prefix to the name "BeachScene-Clip0002", transcode so I have pprores files that have a permanent name, and that I can move to another project without being tied up in a "Private" folder structure similar to working with stupid AVCHD. Then I get rid of the original Private folder.

So I found the solution, Sony's Catalyst Prepare is a pretty advanced data wrangling software. It's copy/ingest feature can batch rename with the option to retain folder hierarchy with MD5 verification!! or extract the clips. I just started testing it and was very impressed, it's subscription based at $150/year. Also offers the ability to set I/O points on each clip before copying.

What problem exactly can renaming cause? And where can I find official explanation by Sony about it?

Your link doesn't work.

I bought Catalyst prepare 2015 for 170 euro, now Sony wants to earn more with a yearly subscription.

I think that it is not worth the money, Catalyst browse is OK for copying. All other is easy in Davinci or any other NLE

I wanted to use EditReady for this exact purpose, although keeping it in the original codec. But it did two things that made me have to reject it. 1) It couldn't keep the camera name, which meant in multi-cam situations I would have had to re-enter the camera names in FCP X. And for long-term use, I find it a very useful piece of metadata even when I'm not doing multi-cam. 2) It's really fast copying files to a local hard drive, but really slow copying to a NAS server. It was taking about 2-3X longer to import over using the FCP X Import function.
