Clip from upcoming feature

I just DP'd a feature for a friend of mine. It was my first time with the HVX and man do I love this camera :)

Anyway, I'm not all that experienced of a DP yet, but this shot I am particularly proud of.

This is straight out of the camera, no CC, no trimming, no nothing.

Peace,
Larry

Looks a little hot in some spots. Plus the shakey camera stuff kind of bothers me. For that shot it seems to be out of place. You should post something else that's a little more visually interesting.

its an interesting shot. my two cents: tripod, and set focus at the halfway point, as the car drives into that pull focus all the way in, you'llstill get that good shallow DOF. I realize were talking creative differnces here.

Perhaps its just me, but the focus seemed soft even in the end of the shot (where it presumably wasn't intended to be).

The focus did not bother me too much although it was kind off distracting. I thought it was blocked so that when she comes to a stop she will be in focus. Is that right?
Perhaps building a rig that can cast a shade on the windshield of the car will help a more clear and contrast picture through the glass than what you currently have. It does not need to be mounted on the car... something simple and stationary just for when she stop will be fine.

for the girl to be out of focus i expected the camera to be focused in on an object or area that she was going to pull up to in the car. seems overexposed to me.

If it's anything to ya. I liked it. I felt the exposure was pretty good... a little hot in spots, but with some good color grading it'll look fabulous... I'm not an "in-camera" guy myself, so I'm all about having a decent image to start out with. I also think the focus was good, she's in focus at the end of the shot which matter... and yes, there are a few slight wobbles in the camera, but if you go back and watch Raiders of the Lost Ark, there are wobbles in a LOT of the dolly shots. :)

It's easy to see that you intended to have the action come into focus and that you did some thinking and preparation for this shot. Hind-sight being 20/20 I would have put a 12 volt fluorescent on the subject and white balanced on her, then actually measured from the glass to the subjects nose line of sight to the camera and added that to the push focus you used to get your shot. It might have helped to have the talent reference a marker when she pulled up to the parking spot. And of course use a steady-cam or a tripod to get away from the consumer camcorder look. Nice drama and establishing shot.
