client wants PAL 720x576 @ 25p

I am shooting pieces of a music video here in North America that will make its way overseas, I have asked the local client to confirm frame rate and file format. Today he came back and said PALdv 720x576 @ 25p.

Should I shoot in HD at 25p and down-rez, or just shoot it in PAL DV to being with.

Any thoughts?

The editor has asked for DV PAL like I said. Speaking to him won't change anything. I'm just debating shooting it in HD @ 25p then down-rezzing to PAL and giving them that.. I've done a lot of frame rate and format conversions before in the DV days and thinking what a shame not to shoot it in HD. What is not great about format conversion are the pixel aspect ratio conversions as that's where a lot of perceived quality loss would occur.

I'm with Stephen. Unless you client is fluent in video talk I would just ask to talk to the person finishing the job. A lot gets lost with the middlemen.

Sorry I don't speak Swahili or I would.

Bottom line is do what client wants I know, ie. client asks for PAL DV, then shooting PAL DV.

My question is if anyone has experience shooting in HD and delivering PAL DV.

Thanks,

Reading around, if my footage will be matched to anamorphic PAL DV (D1 Widescreen 1.85) then HD is pretty close to that and I need only chop off 2.5% vertically (or 28 lines of video).

It for some crazy reason they want 4:3 PAL DV, then I have to crop quite a lot off the left and right sides!

I use Adobe suite of tools including Adobe Media Encoder, I also have access to final cut. I'm not so concerned about what tool to use, just wonder if the PAL DV version would suffer. I will try to test, and post some results incase anyone cares.

Something tells me the rest of the video is being shot on a PAL version of a Canon XL2.. :D

Shoot in 25p and than crop/downrez.

So you actually sub-sampling (and Premiere does that pretty good when cuda is activated) and gain quality over shooting SD in the first place (in which the F3 isn't exactly brilliant, from what I have heard).

Make sure you use the right pixel aspect ratio preset in Premiere or they gonna hate you.

Yes frank, that's what I was curious about hearing. ie. native PAL on the F3 vs. shooting HD and cropping, resizing.

Adobe has seriously impressed me dropping different formats to the timeline and A.) not crashing it like it use to back in the Premiere 5.0 days.. , B.) the resampling power it has.
