client not interested in AF100, wants 7D / 5DII instead

Kinda have to chuckle. Looking at a possible job where the client is adamnt about using a Canon 7D/5DII instead of the AF100. Part of the argument is sound, as they want to be able to intercut with footage already shot on the 7D. I still say footage can always be downgraded/matched, but it can't be upgraded once shot. I want the gig, so I'm not putting up a fight.

I never quite understood a client wanting a specific camera used, but I also understand how "the customer is always right". Just goes to show that owning a particular camera may not pay off, when you will have to possibly rent whatever a client demands.

Eh they're the client, but I say the 5D/7D and AF100 actually intercut really well. Ah well, it's their call.

Pretty much what I've seen done, but they want what they want.

we get that stuff all the time ... you just go with the flow ..

Yep, someday soon some of that flow should shift to the AF100/F3 (when either is in the budget). In the meantime it's 'sure, as you wish'.

I'm a bit let down each time someone ask for my 5DmkII instead of the AF101. It just makes a shoot so much easier and safer when using the AF101.

DSLR was a great revolution, but thankfully "somewhat" short lived (depends who you ask I know.. I know..). Its great to see the improvements made to CMOS for video, and of course the larger format video cameras coming out... anyone know what Canon is planning? I haven't heard much - nor looked that hard either to be honest.....

Yeeeppp. I have a very clear preference for the AF100, and just for the sake of getting better, more reliable footage, I don't ask the client for more funding. 'So we can take the Accord, or the S class, same cost. The Accord? Yes sir.' :D

Sound??? I thought the issue was video (sorry, couldn't resist ).

How 'bout this- (especially if they're a regular, repeat client)- if the shoot's not too crazy and you have the opportunity, double roll on some shots with 5D settings (editman's?) on the AF, so you can show them the AF does Canon, and then some. Just a thought...

I had a client call me tonight and ask her if I could shoot a music video with her 7D and PL lenses... I told her about the AF100, but she was adamant because of some video that was shot on a 7D with PL glass... It was not until I told her that she could not just get an adapter and the 7D had to have its mirror removed and professionally modified to use PL lenses that she considered the AF100. I have yet to go over budget and the details with her as I was on a break on set when she called, but she is adamant about using PL glass, and I doubt she has considered their cost... we will see, but I have a feeling we will end up using my nikons.

Producers just repeat what they hear as being "what to use"... I have a feeling it stems from the stream of BS many of them use to talk their clients into hiring them to produce it.

End of the day though, if they are footing the bill, I will do whatever they ask... I do always warn them beforehand about bad decisions, but whatever, you are paying me, I will shoot it.

It's an age old fact that the techies get crapped on by those "in charge" because they "know what they're doing." Most of the time people just don't know what they're talking about and are basing their opinion on a Vimeo video they saw once that looked amazing probably thinking the camera had something to do with it (instead of the person using it or the subject in front of it or the light/environment).

Oi.

Just show them this...

And this is who they find to take the job:

On a side note: I still have nightmares about the producer/"director" who asked for a RED cam and a set of PL primes, and then after asking me to zoom in durring a shot and me reply that I can't with this lens, we have to dolly in (which we had on set), said that he asked for prime lenses and complained that "these lenes must not be very prime if they can't zoom..." I was speechless...

hahah at silly producer above.

A way to persuade the client, say the lenses you use will give nearly identical image, or some sort of simple concept they probably won't grasp and will take your word for it.
