FS7: Clear Image Zoom?

What's the general feeling about center scan these days. Do people feel its good or is there degradation ?

I just shot a small segment using CS yesterday on my FS7 w/ Sigma lens. There is definitely a degrading in the sharpness when using it. Viewing slog3cine in my viewfinder, with peaking on - it became very obvious when trying to nail focus. But - it was still a usable shot. I was probably at f4.... not so sure I would try it up around f2.

Mark, Sounds like you're only talking about it being soft while shooting in your EVF. Have you looked dat the actual footage though?

I actually have not looked at those shots yet - but will do so when back in the office and working on the edit after the holiday.

I've been using center scan a lot for the extra reach. If a shot looks a little soft it will tolerate some sharpening. Focus is really critical. It's a great way to double the length of your lens though. A lot of the shots in this short are CS: https://vimeo.com/173946125

Very nice Mark. What do you use for sharpening?
Neat video is pretty incredible in my experience , but slow and hardware intensive especially in 4K. I actually found the older version v3 necessary for my own work in FCP7 as v4 crashed.

Just using the regular sharpen filter in AE. Probably the same filter in Premiere. Just don't push it too far, you know...

It really depends a lot on the resolving power of the lens you are using on most lenses I can see the degradation in the viewfinder to different degrees, the only lens that totally fools me is my Zeiss 55mm Otus. I use it on a speed booster I was shooting with it recently in crop mode and I was convinced I had my Milvus 85mm on.

Not sure you want my anecdotal report...especially after seeing markoconnell's shots. (very nice work indeed!) But after reviewing my footage - it's certainly useable (and I was using still lens - and not even a full frame one at that - trying it out as a sort of poor man's multiple prime lens "set"). Because of the very unscientific methods I used - and because I was shooting in studio, not concerned about being wide open - I would definitely test for yourself. Did not notice any increase in noise using CS.
