Cleanse/Detoxification? anyone try these? Info?

So, I haven't been feeling very healthy these past couple of months, nor been sleeping well, and I'm sure the alcohol and ciggs aren't helping either (but you should be happy to know I completely, 100% stopped drinking and driving after my last experience - if you remember. If not, nevermind)

Anyway, I've been thinking about attempting one of these 3 day "cleanses" or "detoxes" to remove toxins from the body, and I'm just wondering if anyone has any good info on the subject.

I really know nothing about them, but I think I'm due for a good detox. I've been doing a bit of research, and there's just SOOO many variations on the net that I can't seem to weed out the good from the not-so-good.

The most common I see seems to be THIS one, but I don't want to just follow trend. I'd prefer actual user experiences if there are any.

Any recommendations or advice or info at all?

It's all a bunch of bullsh!t.

Good rule of thumb is, if someone is trying to sell you something, then their opinion on what they are selling is obviously tainted.

Eat right, excessive and drink lots of water.

It isn't rocket science.

Eat good stuff. Excersise.
and don't be handing out money to get the runs.

thats my motto.

Dr. Oz says a 24 hour fast is as good as any detox. Basically the day before you eat a light dinner. Then the next day drink 8 oz. of water every hour until dinner time. That's it. I once did the 14 day fat flush diet which is a meal plan and copious amounts of unsweetened cranberry juice. Don't know if it detoxed me but I lost 20 pounds.

Point taken... but there's no money involved or sales pitches. Just free info on 3-day detoxes.

I eat extremely well, exercise regularly, and am a lean 160lb 29 year old. On the other hand, I drink HEAVILY and smoke a pack a day. Basically I'm a walking Oxymoron.

Just haven't been sleeping well, and probably looking for a quick fix (to which there is none but the obvious to quick the alcohol and smokes).

Appreciate the info though.

I'd be all for something like this, but I'm hypoglycemic and my blood sugar would drop to an unhealthy level. Not looking to lose any weight... just a good cleaning of the system. The more I research, I think I'll try one that isn't quite so hardcore and still allows fruits, vegetables, and salads.

Try getting up earlier, and by the time bedtime rolls around, you should be ready. Or drink more. Either one should work.

LOL at the oxymoron part I have a few friends like that.

As you said quitting the smokes and alcohol would certainly help but do you drink caffeine at all? Also, try and get on a sleeping schedule and drink plenty of water 64 ounces a day.

Cut that smoking and drinking crap out.

If you continue to toxify that body of yours with those poisons, doing the good stuff won't matter much.

Yup. It doesn't matter what you do, the long term effects of alcohol, nicotine and tobacco will counteract it. Now I'm not going to tell you that 'smokers are jokers' and that you shouldn't use those sin-sticks or the like, but don't expect to be able to get to a fully healthy state while maintaining that.

That said, I used to go on periodic diets similar to that. No food, just water and juice. Juice is important since no food means no nutrients. All simple; orange juice, apple juice, things like that. Very helpful. I never did it very often, but occasionally, especially for certain holidays. But that gets into non-medical influences.

It's not nearly as helpful as lifestyle diet, though. Not smoking, not drinking, eating mostly healthy foods with pretty much no fast food or things like that and so forth add up. And no caffeine, but that's because of restless muscles more than anything.

The most important part is to drink a lot of water and some juice with no stimulants.

One thing about juice diets: on the third day, make sure you have easy access to a bathroom.

I forgot what the percentage is of toxins is in your GUT, so regardless of the smoking, the drinking is what is killing you right now. You do NEED to detox your gut, and there are several ways of doing this.

One is buy a colon cleanser like : http://www.drnatura.com
This is an intestinal cleansing program which you should be doing once a year.

Another is to get 3-4 sessions of colonic hydrotherapy sessions, yes, men do them too. This is not painful but time consuming because it takes about 40 minutes per session and cost about $75-$80 per session. Though this won't help cleanse your large intestines, it will help clean your smaller intestines all the way up to your stomach at this time.

I also suggest you do a Liver Cleanse, here is something I picked from a book:

1 cup citrus (orange, grapefruit, tangerine)
1-2 cloves of garlic
1 small piece of fresh ginger
1 tbsp olive oil

Blend ingredients, drink immediately on an empty stomach an hour before eating, do five days in a row. Drink a tea afterward.

Pick up the book "The Detox Solution" by Dr. Patricia Fitzgerald, she has a wellness center here in Santa Monica, the book is really informative about detoxing.

Also, check your throat and see if it is swollen at all. Many people walk around with subclinical thyroid conditions and don't know it. My bet is your vices that are causing you to lose sleep, so do detox, it does help, and drink lots and lots of water, about half your body weight.

I'm serious dude. I drink a glass every hour, of course, I live in the bathroom.

I should also mention that when I was a lot younger I accidentally became addicted to the amphetamines in my allergy pills, which are also a stimulant. I don't smoke, but from what I understand there can be similar properties. I ended up having a doctor tell me how that worked (really should be a label on those things) when I wanted an explanation for why my sleep schedule had fallen apart. Ends up my heart was suffering very badly from that stuff as well, since it caused the rate to be all over the place, especially before I crashed around 4pm. So that probably relates, and cleansing diets will do nothing to stop it because it's not a lingering effect; it's brought on by the initial effects of the chemicals you're injesting.

Cleansing is going to help in his overall health, once he cleanses his gut, he can start to address his sleep issues, but you'll find most of your troubles lie in your gut.

Good stuff guys (and gals;). I know, I know... the alcohol is, and always has been, my black hole.

Charli! the liver cleanse and other mentioned is exactly the type of stuff I'm looking for. Much appreciated, and I'll definitely keep those in mind.

To answer another question, no, absolutely no caffeine whatsoever. I haven't had even a sip of caffeine in years. Seriously... my body has an adverse reaction to a lot of things, and caffeine is one of them. I drink it, ten minutes later I SWEAT profusely, immediately followed by extreme light-headiness. Same thing when I take hydrocodone, tylenol, or many "recreational" drugs (which I don't do anymore).

Ryan - the volume of cigs you smoke and amount of liters you drink do also play a part of how your brain functions. The central nervous system can only take so much and the body does break down, but the cool thing is the body's capability to 'heal' itself, no matter what crap we shove down our throats, seriously.

I know a guy who drinks/smokes and is in his 90s. He drinks everyday, smokes everyday and he won't die, crazy genes, I'm telling you.

I want you to go about cleansing your body in a step by step process, don't try to do everything at once. Do the liver cleanse first (do this four times a year).

Once you've done the liver cleanse, then consider an intestinal cleanse like Dr. Natura, I've done this, it works, the large intestine does harbor fecal matter (I know it's gross) and this stuff helps chip away at it. I think the entire cleansing takes a month and then you do it annually.

Once you've done some detoxing, then you can start reflecting on things, why you drink so heavily, why you smoke, you have to figure out the 'why' before you can stop or slow down.

Take it one step at a time, Ryan.
