Cleaning The Lens

Been reading up a bit on best ways of cleaning the lens....was out on a Pony and Trap during the holidays on an island and when I came back and played back the footage it was ruined by water specs.

Some people say use them disposable wipes can gather dust and scratch a lens easily. I'd love to hear a good consensus on lens cleaning.
Any reccomendations for a good cleaning kit/cloth....no Walmart this side of the pond?

Also I want to get a good filter so what is best....or most used?
As the saying goes it is a hell of a lot cheaper to replace a filter than a lens.

Well, as to the lens cleaning, and photography store should be able to set you up nicely and rather inexpensively. They sell fancy lens pens and the like now. I use lint free tissues and a mild solution. Works just fine for me.

As to your second question, if you want filters for protection, there are about 3 grades of this stuff.

The first grade is just ordinary grade filters. Usually US$10-20 in the common 52-58mm sizes.

The second grade is often multi-coated and quite nice. These run in the $30-50 range.

The third grade is the hardened stuff. It's rather pricey but you could just about drop your camera on a rock and not break it. I am going to be fitting these to all my camera lenses so I can leave the lens caps at home. As an added bonus fingerprints and such won't stick to them, so they are very easy to keep clean. I wouldn't put these on cheap lenses, but if you're paying big money for your lens, these could be just the thing. They are the Hoya HD series:

And don't forget... If you're putting a filter on the front and still want to be able to attach the Sony lens shade/cover... be sure to get a narrow gauge or thin 3mm thick filter. The usual 5mm thickness will pretty much make it impossible to reattach the Sony lens shade.
