I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF ANYONE ELSE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE HVX TAPE HEADS? OR IS IT NORMAL TO HAVE TO CLEAN THE TAPE HEAD AFTER ONLY 20HR? :undecided

I didn't think anyone was using tape with the HVX . . .

Probably most important it to use a quality Panasonic tape, AY-DVM63MQ, or AY-DVM63PQ with this camera (or DVX-100). There are differences in the manufacturing process that will effect performance (being the larger issue) and cleaning. Just be very sure you're not sourcing your tape at the local pharmacy.

If you are getting artifacts, dropped frames, etc., it might be a good idea to carefully clean the heads or change brand of tape (above).

Surely you jest!!!! Did you think the HVX was designed just for HD???? You may be quite surprised to find that the HVX handles SD very well. It's also great for dumping HD directly to SD with your internal tape.

There are many of us using the HVX in the SD mode for a variety of things including: Events, Commercial work, Seminars, Streaming, etc...

I use it in conjunction with my DVX100's for multicamera events.

As far as tapes are concerned, I have NEVER had to clean the heads of any of my cameras and I shoot an average of six tapes per shoot.

I use the AY-DVM63MQ's ONLY.

THANKS FOR THE INFO...... I USE THE HVX WITH MY TWO DVX'S FOR MULTI CAMERA GIG'S AND I'VE NOTICED THAT I HAD TO CLEAN THE TAPE HEADS TWICE!

ALSO, HD IS GREAT!!! BUT, ONCE WE'VE CAPTURED AND EDITED THE FOOTAGE THEN BURN IT TO DVD IT BECOMES HIGH QUALITY (SD) NOT (HD) AT LEASE UNTIL (HD-DVD) HITS THE POST STUDIOS AND RETAIL MARKETS. PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG.

Its a thing of believing if you really need "quality" tapes, like for example the expensive ones for hdv cams.

I didnt shoot on tape with the hvx, but from friends with a rental service and other dps i know that it is important not to use different tape types or brands BUT ONE.
So if you started with panasonic, try to use always the same product.

But problems after 20 hrs sounds really weird.
What kind of problems did u have that you had to clean it already?

Popular wisdom is that it is an advantage to shoot at highest possible resolution and downrez in post - pretty much as you'd do using a D1 for a website still.

Whether the SD is high quality...
If you shoot in DVCPRO 50 the quality is said to be technically similar to digibeta, which is good. When you shoot DV, you'll get DV whatever camera.

Gunleik,

I Do Agree With Your Wise Words! However, I Just Wanted To Make My Point Regarding (hd/dv). Also, I Trust That We Own The "best" Quality Camera (hvx) Under $70,000. But Even With That Fact In Mind We Still Have Limitations Regarding Hd To Dvd. Again, These Small Limitations Are Only For Now! Therefore, Very High Quality (sd) Is What We Get In The End.

Germanboy,

I Got Weird Blue Lines On The Images During Play Back. But, Once I Used The Cleaning Tape The Problem Was Gone. I Think I Just Need To Buy A Panasonic Capture Deck And Save My Camera's Heads For Good! (lol). Also, I Was Using (maxell 60 Mini Dv Tapes) Because I Ran Out Of Panasonic Tapes.
