cleaning a lens? sounds easy but ....

so I got the UV filter for my dvx, and guess what? My little niece who I was recording walked up to me and touched the lens. Well she's a pretty clean baby no greasy hands etc. But as all of you know we have body oil, which naturally cumulates, on our hands. so to make the story short I have a finger print. Now I'm staring at it like a monkey trying to solve a math problem and don't know what to do. I tried on my other filter to clean similar thing with cleaning lotion for cameras and camcorders but it leaves a really fine smear all over the lens, so technically there is no way to clean it perfectly the way it was manufactured. My question is: is there a way in which to clean it perfectly or do I just have to either go along with or to buy a new filter?? Damn that would be another $30, which I don't really want to spend.

Thank you in advance for your help.

one is nikon lens pen and kodak pen

and then there are kodak cleaning paper tissues, my ony question is do I need some sort of lotion with these tissues??

Re: cleaning a lens? sounds easy but ....

Kodak makes a lens cleaning fluid. Put a few drops on their lens cleaning tissue and gently wipe the lens to remove finger prints. Try to do this soon after you get the finger prints. Some lens coatings are very sensitive tofinger prints.

Re: cleaning a lens? sounds easy but ....

I use one of those lens pens all the time. Hot breath works great as a lube for the filter. They're cheap too... my wife used the brush on my pen once to clean her LCD screen on her laptop. There was so much dust on the brush I had her buy me a new one!!! Easy to carry around and don't blow away in the wind.

Captain,
which one do you use, Nikon or Kodak?? I have for some reason a temptation to go for Kodak, since I can more related to film. lol :) Btw this is totaly vague assumption.

Be very careful on what cleaner you use. If you use a non MC cleaner you can really screw things up. I suggest using Formula MC cleaner.

Re: cleaning a lens? sounds easy but ....

jarred would that be the liquid solution to use with Kodak tissues?? I used some other type of photo solution for my other cheaper camera and it did not quite work. It left very fine filter over the lens and under certain angle you could see it. So that is what mainly worries me.

Re: cleaning a lens? sounds easy but ....

For the record, I bought a large bottle of lens cleaner from SAMs in their optical department.  Works fine.  It also came with a small 2 ounce spray bottle. Best thing about it...~$5 and free refills for life.  I was skeptical at first, but after being assured it was safe for all lens types including anti-reflective coatings (also states it on the bottle), I tested it.  I use that with lens tissue (also included with the solution) and microfiber cleaning cloths I get from B&H.

Anyway, just thought I'd throw it out there.

What about some cheaper ways of doing it.

I rmember imloser once said in a post that he at time ''licks the dust off'' the lens.

Aejaz,
I was gonna ask how much cheaper can it get than 4.95 per bottle, but you got me on that one hahaha ;D ;D ;D

Re: cleaning a lens? sounds easy but ....

Hi there,
the lens licking is an old trick but i wouldn't reccomend it on a DVX100.

I used to use the technique when filming with my eumig nautica and Nikonos 3 & 5's in rough weather on a boat or in the waves on a beach (waterproof 8mm and 35mm cameras).
It reduces condensation and causes water splashed onto th e lens to quickly run off and not cause beading. the effect doesnt last long so you have to do it regularly for the effect and usually causes a sore throat due to the salt. :P

Dust should be blown off as silicates will scratch a lens as fast as a diamond will. Your saliva is a rather powerful acid (at least, considering it is in your mouth) and should never come into contact with your equipment in any way.

Re: cleaning a lens? sounds easy but ....

Cleaning solutions can strip the protective coating off the lens over time is what I have heard. Simple puffs and light rubbing with microfiber should do the trick. Gently.
