Another GREAT video.

Ok, I have some questions for you.

1- I love the way it's possible to see some details of the guitar player when he's in backlight (the slow-motion shot). The camera wasn't supposed do "see" that. Did you bounce or lit him with a little weak reflector?

2- Did you light the gas station or that overhead light is its original fluorescent?

3- About the color correction, a question I always ask: what are your typical "steps"?

Cool... I like the story and the shot choice. I got a bit bored with the circling-around-the-band bit but overall I like it.

one more question: what did you use for the follow-on rig for that last shot? It's a fairly long move, and it's very smooth, and glides to a nice easy halt.

ta guys.

the circling thing started to bore me, too ;) originally when we shot that the idea was much more advanced - it was kind of homemade motion control, trying to make sure the dolly was always turning at the same speed, and the light source was always at the same position in the frame, so that you could cut at any point and have the lighting and position of the performer be 'identical', regardless of whether it was a sunset shot or a night shot or whatevs. but once we started falling behind schedule, that went out the window real quick ;)

gumonstro:
1- that was the litepanels kit again, just bringing up some of the details
2- gas station was as we saw it. every time i pass it i feel like i'm driving through a movie
3- i do the main grade in final cut with the 3-way, then sometimes add a little vignetting when i go into after effects for the final output.

doug - that was just a rental car with a cinesaddle on it and a light touch on the brakes:

hey jason, i saw your new video when i was checking out your site the other day. it looks great. Do you have any more projects in the works?

i see you have moved to the east coast. if you are ever shooting a project on the east coast and need crew, drop me a line. I'm in philly but i find myself in nyc from time to time. i would love to work on one of your projects. Catch you later.

February my ass!

Took ya long enough, watching now..

EDIT:

I feel the desert driving shots are the best in the video - a car driving across a desert, spewing dust, backlit by the sun, how could you go wrong!?

However, I am gonna have to admit that I liked the "You Drive" video better, but then again, how many times can you crash a caddy in slow mo?

I saw what you were trying to do with the angled dolly, although as you mentioned earlier it got a bit boring

I loved the ringlight stuff, I love ringlight stuff in general - how do you like HVX workflow? (correct me if I'm wrong but it was mostly varicam stuff on the You Drive video, aside from the phantom)

Looked great though, good stuff man

wow you did the You Drive vid! i've always been a fan of that, and the band for that matter. Gonna check out their new album.

thanks.

thanks chaps. nothing in the works right now on the music video front - my job is keeping me superbusy - but starting to kick around some ideas that don't involve cars, fire, or wild animals. we'll see what shakes out.

the HVX workflow is interesting, although kind of petrifying. you shoot it, and that's all good... and then you have to copy it. and when you're under the gun on a set, you have no idea if your copy is intact, but you need to reformat the card before the next setup. so it kind of requires a camera assistant, whereas previously it would be easy enough to just load up another DV tape. but i love the results, especially with a mini35 stuck on it.
