CitiDISK HD has started shipping

Hey everyone,

We finally started shipping the CitiDISK HD! The first 5 pilot units went out a week ago and we shipped the next batch today. Feel free to email me if you have any questions on the product.

Edit: I'll be at the WEVA Expo 2006 with CitiDISK HD's on display at the B&H and Armato's Pro Video booths if anyone wants to see them in person.

I got a Citidisk 100 HD last week-direct from Shining, the 120 was not available, it works--but--
The HD files are QT Mov, and not mxf. So you only have two audio tracks and on my system it only works on Edius 4.
There are a few other things, in HD Mode the camera start/stop does not control the Citidisk, so you have to manually start/stop. And on my unit it stops recording after on long takes after 12 to 20 minutes. I am sure my questions will be addressed in future firmware upgrades. At the moment I am paying the price of being an early adoptor.

OldManVideo,

There's already a firmware upgrade to fix the recording length problem and probably a few other issues you have, I chose not to ship my stock until that problem was corrected although I know Shining did ship a few units themselves before that. The latest firmware I have is dated 7/28/2006. Let me know if you need me to email it to you, its not on their website. Also, before you do a firmware upgrade on your CItiDISK HD make sure you donwload the latest version of the upgrade software from the Shining Tech website.

The procon website mentions that it records the stream in mxf.. is this not true?

MXF recording will be available as a firmware upgrade, its one of a few additional features that are still in development. I based my website description off the original specs I got from shining and that will be changed during my next batch update of my website.

As far as my customers are concerned I've heard nothing but positive reviews from them about the CitiDISK and the nonexistant return rate thusfar are good signs :)

What does the CITIDISK to work prober in "rougher" situations?

Is there any "antishock"?
Id be highly interested to hear from some users..!
What about cameramount?
What about battery power?
Is it connected through fw/USB to computer?

Is it compatible with PAL? An what about over/under cranked footage from the HVX, how is that handled?

Richard,

Any idea when the MXF recording firmware update will be available?

Thanks,
Kevin

Is it just me or does anyone else get the feeling that this Citidisk is really NOT (in it's current state) a tool for HVX users. I for one do not like the fact that the pertainent information about the product is not easily available and what's available is WRONG.

Until someone can with a strait face answer the type of questions posed above this thing should be catorgorized under the title "BEWARE".

Yupp, I get that feel also.... But then again, it's cheap...

Since it's recording via firewire the citiDISK must not be able to capture more than a few of the HVX's HD resolutions right? Where are all the detailed specs we're missing for this unit? If it's shipping, all specs should be available no?

Technically it should be able to capture everything but native modes (those where the HVX200 doesn't output redundant frames and where it doesn't send any data to the DV port).

Does this unit take a Battery or does it need an AC adapter? Has anyone else bought one? How has it worked out?

Im so curious about this MXF thing, because it just isnt supposed to be possible to do MXF files through firewire, unless its simulated somehow, but how could it know what frames are redundant and all that fun stuff?

MXF is just a container format. The data coming through the Firewire port is encoded using the DV/DVCPro/DVCPro50/DVCProHD codecs, and is saved to disk by the device or program that receives the data. The device or program has the choice of what container format to use -- that can be AVI, QT, or MXF. The audio and video data themselves are not altered in any way.

... and the "redundant frames" stuff is tagged in the user bits section of the timecode stream, so that information is always available.

This is obviously moving slightly off topic, but how is the over/undercrank situation for PC users, if you don't use p2 cards (but rather a harddisk recorder etc). Is there NLE's handeling this correctly (removing excess frames etc), and if so wich ones?
