My Cineroid failed this morning. *Battery is good. It powers up, but no image. Not even the Cineroid splash screen. Any thoughts?

Here is a pict that shows the red power light and the glow of the black LCD screen. There also seems to be a bit low level whine be emitted.

dafilms: Did you ever find a solution? I had the same problem yesterday. Actually, I'm on my second Cineroid - the first one displayed weird color blocks and the peaking stopped working, so the vendor (Abel's) exchanged it for another one. Now this one worked fine until yesterday when it did exactly what yours did. I figured it must be a connector, and when I looked closely at the input I can see that the receptacle in the Cineroid is worn on one side, as if from hard use (I've only plugged a cable in like four or five times!)...

So I went to a friend who has a bunch of HDMI cables and tried different ones till I found one that worked. Today I am going to try to glue that short cable's connector into the Cineroid to make it permanent... I realize that it will make it impossible for me to exchange it again, but I need the finder desperately this week for a shoot.

It bothers me that there is no warranty for these (admittedly I would be voiding it today even if there were) and that there is no customer support.

Now that's a deal breaker. I had no idea, and I've been considering this (only?) affordable EVF.

Abel's has been very good about this, but if there are a lot of problems, who knows? I'm really upset about it because I designed my entire AF100 setup around having a side finder (I handhold almost exclusively) and I am on a shoot this week, which has forced me to depend on the LCD, not my way of shooting at all.

I should add that the Cineroid is an excellent design.. it's bright and sharp, the peaking and zebras work well, it has 1:1 pixel enlargement which is great when you don't want the red peaking. The supplied battery lasts more than a day of normal shooting, and they are cheap to replace or add. The entire unit with battery is light enough that on the custom mount I made for the side of the AF the camera doesn't fall over when I set it down.

I really like this thing... but it scares the hell out of me when something stops working during a shoot!

To add to this love fest, my cineroid went down today! One of the power pins on the back came off when removing the always too tight battery.
Abel has offered to replace it but have none in stock : (

If it's any consolation, the newer ones have looser battery compartments, but you've got to use the cover or the battery might fall out. It's really too bad that such a basically good design should be hampered by these minor (probably bean-counter generated) mechanical issues.

In my case, I bought an AF100 only after I was sure there was an external finder available so I could handhold. I used the AF on the first job this past weekend, a TV spot for a college, but after the Cineroid failed I had to finish the shoot with my HPX500. Not a stellar start!

Yeah, I'd put up a picture of mine if I had a URL for it... I built a bracket for the Cineroid that mounts off the handle. I sure liked it until it stopped working, which, of course, was right when I needed it.

Mac,
You don't need an url to post photos. Go to quick reply window, lower right hand corner, press Go Advanced , scroll down to manage attachments and you will be able to add your photos from your computer.

Did not know that.. Thanks, but now I'll have to take the picture...

On topic, does anyone know the status of RedRock or Zacuto external finders?

I'm pretty sure the Zacuto EVF goes on pre-sale April 5th and they said expect it to be delivered 3-5 weeks from then, sometime around May 1st.

Is anyone having trouble with blacks being too crushed and whites clipping too early? No matter how I set the brightness / contrast it's like this. The 11.5 pluge bar doesn't display in the color bars while other pro monitors are able to display this with adjustment of brightness. Trying to figure out if the Cineroid is really like this or perhaps mine is defective. really hard (impossible) to expose with it.

Didn't realize there was no warranty!

There may be a warranty, carried by the dealer, so maybe I spoke out of school. I only know that there is no form, paper or on-line, that you fill in to register date-of-purchase.

As for contrast, I do think the Cineroid is too contrasty, but personally I like it for focus. I shoot documentaries, so zebras are generally enough for me since I don't have to perfectly match or intercut shots like in a narrative. But, to be honest, I haven't even set it up to bars. Now that I have it working again, I'll try that tomorrow and see (yes, my glue job has it on the road again).

FYI- I contacted Cineroid USA and they sent me a replacement the same day. The battery seems to fit better, although my battery life seems extremely short. Anyway the new seems to be working. Finger crossed. It will be interesting to see how the Zacuto EVF compares.

Has anyone heard anything new about the Redrock EVF?
