Cineporter Update

Talked to a couple people over at Specialized Communications yesterday and they expect the Cineporter to be ready at the end of second quarter/beginning of third, so June/July. A little later than what I'd hoped. Also, there will be two models, a 160G and a 320G. The 160 will be priced for around 2K and the 320 at 3K. Apparently they've received so many good suggestions, they're implementing some of them. They had thousands of these from around the world and are still getting about a hundred a day. One thing they're doing is making it sturdier, in case it's dropped no damage will be done. Oh well, guess we'll see as things seem to be hopping over there and are continually fluid.

Yeah, the price is a little steep... If I did a lot of live event shooting or long-form stuff, I would consider it though. In the end, it's still a hard drive device. And no matter how rugged they make the exterior, the drive inside is still vulnerable to various forces and motion of the unit.

Hey, special offer!! Who want's 40 8GB P2 cards for a price of $3000 ? ($75 per card)

They come in the form of the Cineporter 320 GB available in June.

I, for one, do!

Yeah it's all too much, but the Cineporter will cost about $9/gig, while the 8GB P2 @$1400 costs $175/gig. And since I'll need that kind of storage, it's a no-brainer as far as cost. As long as they deliver the goods in a fair amount of time. Not sure what the Firestore is going for ($2K?), but it's supposed to be available at the end of March. Maybe it will be more competitive than the Cineporter, and for sure will be in relation to P2's.

The FS100, depending on whom you read, will be priced anywhere from $1,400-$1,800 street. If I'm remembering correctly, I think Rush from EVS said he thought $1,400. Late March release sounds right.

Thanks for that info Jan.

Originally when JVC talked about the DR-HD100 it mentioned being able to daisychain up to three Firewire hard drives to give you longer recording times. Looking at the specs now it doesn't look like that made it to the final version.

I am presuming that the FS100 won't have that feature either, but does anyone know if there is any way of dumping from a FireStore to a hard drive in the field?

I guess I don't understand why people seem to think the Cineporter is too expensive - but no one seems to be saying the same about the Firestore (or maybe they are and I just haven't seen it?)

The Cineporter seems like it will offer much better options than the Firestore - seeing as it will allow you to record in 720PN mode (meaning when you shoot 24fps you'll have 2.5 times more footage per gig than you would with the Firestore)... and every other 'perk' that comes with shooting on P2 cards.

Also, the Cineporter 160GB model is supposed to cost around 2K, is that right?
The Firestore is only 100GB from what I understand, and it's going to cost the same - close to 2K?
If anything sounds like its too expensive, it's the Firestore (roughly $12.50/Gb vs $20/Gb)
The Firestore will have less capacity and less functionality for what sounds like roughly the same price.

If you're looking for hard drive recording for the HVX, so far the Cineporter seems like a no brainer to me.

...and on top of that, it would defenitely be worth the extra grand to me if they included a RAID1 config in the 320GB model. :D

About cineporter been to expensive... if you compare it with the FS100 you might say it alittle more expensive, but you have to understand that you are dealing with P2 System. You can see all your footage off the camera, you can delete a clip. Very easily.
Also you could actually use it at the sametime as the FireStore as a Backup.

Now if they implement all the stuff I emailed them, you will see that FS100 is just a toy compared to it ;)

I really like the hot swappable batteries as well, I don't remember the Firestore offering that (I didn't see any references in the docs I've read anyway). Yeah, you might jiggle the camera a little, but that's going to be a lot easier to explain to the bride than a 20 second cut in the middle of the vow exchange :)

Actually, I like the concept of using over-the-counter Pana batteries too.

I'm sure the Firestore will be nice too and it does appear light and compact, but dollar for dollar the Cineporter seems the better deal to me too. Of course, I think they're both probably over priced, but that's supply and demand at work.

The firestore does have one HUGE advantage. It appears like it will be out of the gate some time before the cineporter.

...And you don't have to worry about the firewire cable coming unplugged if you move the camera.

Well it will still have a Cable, but PCMCIA slot are bigger connector, they might implement a PCMCIA locking system.

I like the belt Cineporter system, except I am afraid of any damages to the hard disk

I like cineporter, but I do not expect it to be able to flawlessly do 1080 footage untill 2007. I can't wait that long to spend my next $2,000.

I need something that is a one man show, within the next 2 months.

I think cineporter will do 720 fine, just don't see it doing 1080 for a whole host of reasons that are too lengthy to go into. 1080 is not, or will not be easy for a long long time.

I have changed my opinion about the P2 store many times, but "right now" it may be the way to do it "right now".

Green Hornet,

I'm a little confused about your post, 720 vs. 1080? What do you mean?
