CinePorter™ FAQ

Will the spinning drive(s) have a gyroscopic effect? Would this even be useful for helping out handheld stabilization, or would there be some soft of drawback to this?

How long will a 6000mA/h battery last in a single and dual drive configuration? And where do those 6000mA/h batteries come from? Certainly not Jarred or Panasonic!

Q: does the cine porter have a fan? if so how loud? what about vibrations?

A: CinePorter™ does have a very small fan. It comes on only when necessary and will be off most of the time. When it is on it runs at a very slow speed and is virtually silent. It is also in the very back part of the case away from the microphone.

:( What is virtually silent? What db are we talking here? If you are going to have a fan making a perceivable noise then please keep it on constantly or at least give the option of turning on to get a consistent ambient. Unless it is completely silent an intermittent fan noise would be very bad when trying to edit the footage.

Cheers

Hi David, thank you for the technology and for answering our questions. I have two questions:

1. What is the advantage of the CinePorter over something like Focus's Firestore FS-100?

2. You said that you will have estimated pricing and ship dates published shortly... can you go a little more in depth as to when "shortly" is? Before the holidays? After the holidays? etc.

Thanks.

David, I'm in Asia, and am expecting to purchase the camera on March. I'm very, very interested in your product, and really would like to have just the very last doubts in my head cleared.

1- Will it record only the active frames like the P2card in 720P?

2- I've seen a Jpeg of a tentative mounting of the cineporter. It was connected to the bottom of the machine. How do we connect a tripod sled or plate? is there a Tripod mont? And with the fan, will it vibrate in a Tripod mounting?"

3- I'm a glidecam smooth shooter operator. How do you think the cineporter will affect my shooting? Any problems?

4- Can we connect two cineporters of 250 GB (maxing at 500GB) to the camera at the same time?

5- Can we mail order directly to you?

Thanks in advance. If these question marks are to be cleared positively, I would like to make a preorder!

That's not a bad idea.
How about a switch to either turn the fan 'on' 'off' or leave it on 'auto'
(with an LED light to warn of possible overheating)

Okay, now I'm just adding cost.

How about we clip the wires on the fan and get a thermometer?
That's the DVXUser spirit!

Most of those questions were already answered in this thread.

Excuse me, but are you connected to the Cineporter? What does your post add to this thread other than a rude reply to something that doesn't concern you?

1-I didn't see anything written about the active frames

2-I Didn't see anything about fan vibration on tripod or stabilizer

3- Saw an answer about connecting 2 cineporters, but not the full capacity models. If it is indeed a disk array like Jarred sugests, this can prove problematic, and only the Cineporter team can answer this, not you.

4- What do you gain with these type of replies anyway? You just make the original poster angry, and make yourself sound rude.

David,

It seems that some of the questions you're getting are related to the benefits of using P2 cards, so in an effort to 'cut to the chase' ....

Seeing at the CinePorter is using the P2 cards slot, does it basically 'fool' the camera into thinking it is recording to a P2 card? And if so, is there any feature of P2 card technology that the CinePorter can NOT replicate?

(i'm referring to things here like recording 24 native frames without the need of duplicate frames in 720P, inclusion of all metadata, etc).

Thanks for any additional information.

VERY good question. Very important that it does. If not it effectivly cuts the drive space by 55% or so.

Cheers,
Chris

How about this. When recording, the fan stops (never gets activated). When pausing, the fan starts (if it needs to be active)? That would be great, wouldn't it?

Hello again everyone,

Jarred,

You are correct. The base unit is with one drive and a second drive option. With two drives you will have a raid 0 configuration doubling the storage capacity. I guess I will go ahead and reveal to you that a mirrored array giving the CinePorter™ redundant capability for critical shoots will be available as an option sometime after the CinePorter™ ships.

Louis,

The short answer is yes. Thats the whole idea behind the CinePorter™

The long answer is, the P2 card is not a simple RAM device but a microcomputer that responds to hundreds of instructions from the camera. We have to address all of those individually, so we have to write software and test each and every one to achieve full functionality. We can ship the CinePorter™ without some of the functionality sooner and post free firmware upgrades as they are written and tested or we can wait until it's all "in there". That's one of the reasons we have not decided on a ship date.

I'll try to answer all the new questions, let me know if I miss one.

Q: Will the spinning drive(s) have a gyroscopic effect? Would this even be useful for helping out handheld stabilization, or would there be some soft of drawback to this?

A: Even two drives have very little gyroscopic effect. You will likely not even notice it. We will publish the data when the enclosure is finalized. I'm not sure how you will "translate" it though. I guess we'll have to get the Beta testers report on how "it feels" for you guys.

Q: How long will a 6000mA/h battery last in a single and dual drive configuration? And where do those 6000mA/h batteries come from?

A: At this time we estimate the battery to last over 4 Hrs with one drive and 3 Hrs with two. This is subject to change until "real world" testing is completed. There is also a standard 4 pin XLR power connector that can be accessed when the battery is removed. For more information about the battery you can visit our web-site. www.spec-comm.com

Q: What is virtually silent? What db are we talking here? If you are going to have a fan making a perceivable noise then please keep it on constantly or at least give the option of turning on to get a consistent ambient. Unless it is completely silent an intermittent fan noise would be very bad when trying to edit the footage.

A: We will have published data on sound levels in the different configurations in the near future. I personally can't tell the difference between the fan being on and off, but i'm getting old :). I think having the option for the fan being on all the time is easy to implement. I will pass it on to engineering.

Q: What is the advantage of the CinePorter over something like Focus's Firestore FS-100?

A: Firestore is a great product and our dealership sells it as well as other products. We prefer not to comment on the differences since we have interest in both. There is plenty of information for everyone to make their own comparisons.

Q: You said that you will have estimated pricing and ship dates published shortly... can you go a little more in depth as to when "shortly" is? Before the holidays? After the holidays? etc.

A: I can tell you that the MSRP price for the CP-2 100GB should be up on our web site today. We will not have a ship date until after the beginning of the year.

Q: Will it record only the active frames like the P2card in 720P?

A: See above

Q: How do we connect a tripod sled or plate? is there a Tripod mont?

A: We will have some pictures for you as soon as the enclosure design is finalized. We are waiting for the released version of the HVX to do all the weight and balance testing. The CinePorter™ will come with a "shoe" to mount to the camera and tripod mount holes on the bottom. We recommend only using a single CinePorter™ in a handheld configuration. As the units go out to the beta testers we are looking to get "real world" feedback on different configurations.

Q: Can we mail order directly to you?

A: At this time, international distribution, except for Canada, has not been determined. We will start taking pre-orders when the ship date is announced.

Thank you again for all the great questions and please let me know if there is anything I need to clarify.

David, thank you for the detailed response to the deluge of questions.
I'm looking forward to seeing more about the CinePorter in the near future.

By the way, very diplomatic answer regarding the FireStore.
I'm glad to see your 'upfrontness' in regards to having interest in both.

David,

Thanks for being here and answering our questions. To me that speaks volumes about the vendors who are willing to do that. I was wondering about the temperature range listed at 40 degrees. If I remeber my conversion right that is about 104 degrees farenheit. Fan or no fan that seems a bit of limitation. So outdoor summer shooting and ambient is over 100 am I going to run into trouble with the drive? IS there anyway to monitor the temperature?

Hmmm good call Gopher.
While we try to avoid shooting outdoors here in Texas in August (it routinely gets over 100 degrees)...it inevitably happens.
:) I still have to pay the electric bill.

I'd also be interested in hearing more detail on the temperature ranges for the CinePorter.

That is an excellent question! Thank you.

Would anyone like to post the operating temperature for the HVX200 or the DVX100?

Alright...I guess we might have an idea of where this is going.

EDITED TO ADD:

From the HVX 16 page brochure:
Operating Temperature: 32F to +104F (0C to +40C)

Got your point David...thanks.
:)

Thank you Luis,

We will guarantee those numbers, but we'll do much better in the real world.

Damn, thats not a lot of latitude, considering it gets well below 32F in
most parts of this country in the winter, and gets over 104F in many of the Southern and Southwestern states in summer.

Fierce, I think David's point is that that is the range manufacturers will guarantee but that 'real world' ranges will go beyond that.

I just did a quick search of specs online and guess what I found?

DVX100, HVX200, XL2, XLH1, and the Z1U all have an "operating temperature" range of
32° to 104° F (0° to 40° C).

So nothing to worry about I'm sure.

EXCELENT responses David! Thanks for beieng so active here.

Regarding the gyroscopic effect.. Try pickign up an extarnal Hard drive (Firewire or USB..) when it's on and see if you cnanfeel the spin [don't shake it! "what's that click?"!]

Njah.. those temp specs for cameras are jsut to protect warantie for the most part.

- Mikko ..has shot outside in well under -15c for an hour with an XL1 with no touble.
