Cinemek G35: Does It Exist?

I just wanted to post here that I received my G35. I've been swamped with work so I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but I thought since I started this thread, I'd better let everyone know that Jonathan came through.

hey greg congrats on your new adapter. if you have the time can you please post some footage up using the g35. oh and what cam will be you shooting on. i have the hmc150 and this adapter is one of my three choices. The letus elite, Sgblade or The g35. one day i will be leaning more towards the letus the next day the sgblade and the next the g35. i cannot make up my mind. one thing i like the most about the g35 is no moving parts, no noise, and completely sealed which is probably going to last alot longer then the blade or letus.

Thanks
Ninos

definitely. i am buried right now but i will post some footage when i get a chance. i have the hvx200. i chose the G35 for all the reasons you stated.

Reading this thread is starting to get me worried as I paid for my G35 back around October 2008 and still haven't received it. Jonathan has promised me he hasn't forgotten and the manufacturing process is just taking longer than usual. I emailed him again a couple of days ago so waiting for a reply to that. I bet he is busy. He seems like a really nice honest guy, but if there is a chargeback time limit on my credit card this does worry me slightly.. hmm..

he even offered to ship me one and then the universal mount when it is ready, so I might take him up on that

Hello to all, i admire all the filmmakers trying to perfect their craft. I do not post much but this is something that deserves notoriety So i thought i'd add some quick input to this thread. I received my G35 and WOW, Simply beautiful , Filmic and Epic. I am using it with an EX1 and Zacuto support. Both products rock! Great E2E, very minimal CA if any, way into the TV safe zone only on a few lenses , 24mm, 85mm a little soft, those lenses are kind of tricky with the EX1 optics anyway, even with the Elite. Easy setup, very minimal tweeking and lightweight for handheld shooting. Shot interior with two 1k lights , one for key and one for back ground. Looked great , of course next week i will test more. Shot several HD charts with multiple lenses, very impressive. I will be glad to post some footage and / or screen grabs a.s.a.p but just wanted to be straight to the point, "this is the Jaguar of Bokeh "we all have been waiting for. Check out Philip Bloom's new short, it's brilliant! Jonathan is a passionate shooter and it shows in the product. This is not a corporate, industrial adapter for those average so-so jobs, this is for "Today, i'll make Lawrence of Arabia and go to bed content, realizing what i'm on this earth for, "I'm a Filmmaker!" Great work Cinemek

Hey jonathan,
i know that you are really busy at the moment, but i had a quick question. if i were to order the g35 today would it still be the 4 week wait (hmc150) or will it be longer because of your current situation.
Thanks

We are 4 weeks out on new orders. Thanks!

One of the areas I’ve been most pleased with the G35 is how it performs in interviews on location in small areas as well as insert stage tabletop setups.

Great bokeh and nice sharpness. Not to mention a quick and very easy setup. The following is a link to a few uncorrected scenes from a recent corporate promotional project ...

http://vimeo.com/4380663

While I’ve read concerns about light loss, these interviews were done with two Kino Flo Diva 400s and 575w HMI. Tabletops with a Diva 400, a 1K and a couple of 200w Lowell Pros using an HVX200a with Zeiss 50mm, 85mm f1.4 ZF primes and a Nikon 60mm f2.8 macro.

Again, this is uncorrected and granted there was a fair level of ambient light in many of the interview scenes, but surprisingly, the gaffer and I seldom found ourselves really wrestling with the light level.

Jonathan has a terrific product with the Cinemek G35 and I’m a fan.

Hey guys, okay just got back from a gig. Here are some screen grabs from the initial set- up test shoot G35- EX1. I apologize for shooting flowers and family but they work cheap and are non sag! ( lol) It is important to understand an image this great right out of the box has put alot of power in Indie hands. Watch out Spielberg. I'm not that familiar yet with the attachment process so bare with me, i guess there are file size restrictions, oh god dreaded jpeg compression.

Minimal lighting on interior shots, no Picture Profiles , No grading, this is raw! Will shoot more this weekend, anybody who has ordered a G35 has alot to look forward too!
Peace Out PAB

Thanks for those shots - nice indoor ones, very nice colour considering it's not corrected. I see you have a rail to support your camera and lens. Is this necessary with the G35? I have a G35 on order, but haven't considered getting a rail like this?

Hello, Yes the support rod is essential to hold up the CINEMEK G35, too heavy on the lens as all adapters are. The rail supports are needed for a follow focus, Matte box , handheld use, etc
Get excited!

mpenczner, thanks for the vid that is some amazing footage you have there and that adapter just makes it a whole lot sweeter.

DEPTH OF PHIL, thanks for the grabs, cant wait to see that video. i'm guessing the only lighting used for those indoor shots was just what was available?

Thanks
Ninos

Looks great!
I really want one of those G35's as well, hopefully they'll release it with a pentax mount one day, don't like to use those converters between the lens and adapter.

Hey I just stumbled on this thread... and thought I'd say that (while I know how frustrating the situation can be) I gotta give it up to Jonathan for coming through. I got my G35 yesterday... after a 6 month wait... but I got it for free (Twilight Fest prize). Because I got it for free, I really have no right to complain about the wait time, but the fact of the matter is.. he gave me one for free! I haven't had a chance to play with it yet, but I will this weekend and I'm super excited. So those of you waiting for G35's that you've actually PURCHASED.. hang in there... cuz I promise it'll get to you!

I received my G35 yesterday too. HPX170 and Nikon Mount. First impressions is that it is solidly built, comes in a pelican case - very nice. After I fit it in, I find it difficult to focus onto the ground glass - like I usually did for my Letus Extreme. perhaps because the grain is so fine. But the adaptor threw the entire world into darkness - really eats up so much light. Gosh...

However, however, the image is definitely gorgeous with good edge to edge sharpness. Overall, I may consider using my G35 and Letus interchangably, depending on lighting. I am happy with it, I guess. I will be putting together a handheld rig with Zacuto baseplate, shoulder pads and rails, cinevate's HQ mattebox and grips. Will put up some pics soon. Exciting.. hehe.

I pasted a few bits from a different thread i had replied to...

It's very hard to just focus on a static screen such as the G35. I have to fiddle with the macro and auto focus but it always snaps in, a combination between the camera's manual focus as well.

You are right about feeling dark at first , just like film funny enough, but when you add light, what an image! I'm curious how you having both the G35 and the Extreme side by side on the same camera would compare the Bokeh? Now in the daylight, interior or exterior, i feel so relieved i don't get that awful video look i dread with the raw camera and have to use so much ND to get the shot to look some what filmic.

The G35 screams "Film" to me and i can always use the camera (EX1/EX3) raw with a mattebox and filters for low light shots at 24p and inter cut with the G35. Here are picts of my initial set up, though it's undergoing constant updates. lol

Please post some results and rig picts, this is a great adapter but we need more feedback from users. Thanks

I whole-heartedly agree with Phil. The G35 is a great adapter capable of producing quite outstanding images - very creamy and organic in the way it scatters the light.

Here are a few grabs from yesterday - all available light.

Exactly, beautiful natural "warm" film like images, makes me want a bloody cup of tea though!

What lens did use, i noticed the typical bluish CA when shooting blown out spots, that is pretty common with most adapters and lenses.
By playing with camera iris , f stop and a slight degree of angle of the lens , for example ever so slightly not shooting dead straight on but coming in from a slight offset. These CA blooms greatly reduce, try and behold, the prism reacts to CA when straight on a flat plane.
How are you going about lighting interior shots that are half lit with daylight, and mixing the two?

Keep em coming we all need to see more G35 out there!

thanks for the feedback Phil,

Lenses were Nikon - mostly 24/f2.8, 55/f1.2, 85/f1.8

these were shot with only the available light spill from the adjacent windows. I debated on whether or not I should bounce a little "Lisa Marie" for a warm fill on her right (camera left) side. given that this was mostly an "au natural" test, I was interested to see how it felt without anything extra - so in this case, no lights and no grading.

Here's a link to the actual clips:

http://www.vimeo.com/4684491

In terms of mixing light sources, I guess it depends - I'd probably try a 1k with a 1/4 or 1/2 CTB for fill or maybe bulb my Kinos at 5600 to lift the ambient light level in the room and do my best to correct the difference in post.

I'm way too new at this to offer any real insight - I appreciate the comments.

hey dmc. i see some vignetting in your stills. is this related to your zoom level?

Yeah, I think so. Probably most noticable on the 24mm lens as I was at the absolute very edge of the circle inside the adapter - using only the LCD screen it was a little tough to see.

thanks for the input.
