Cinemartin goes bankrupt

I'm not sure you do actually.

You've done some computer coding. Good for you. So far I haven't seen you build the camera you claim is "easy". Isn't that the point of this whole thread ?

I've got a bunch of friends that make cameras. At one point you run out of fingers to count the number of PhD's just on the floor of the camera development space. So far they're one of the few that have managed to survive past the making their first model and it's only because they've been disruptive and ignored what traditional users and old hollywood pros and establishment say they want.

If what you say is really true then we'd all be shooting Axiom.

I've also worked with others that have failed to bring imaging developments and innovation to market or failed after launch. And it's for none of the reasons you're listing.

JB

I've hired and worked with pHD's and literal rocket scientists from JPL and Caltech: education is irrelevant to actually building things that work! The best creators I've worked with have been dropouts, English majors, biology majors, psychology majors, and musicians. I could care less about one's education on paper. What I do care about is their prior work history in creating things that actually work, especially skill at making complex systems simpler. Making complex, hard to use pieces of junk is pretty easy (sure, I'm guilty of that in the past too, and my writing is (still) over dense with information haha (working on it)). A lot of people are impressed with complexity. I'm impressed with simplicity. Compare ARRI's menus to Sony's. Which is more popular? ARRI cameras don't have a lot of options, it just works. With the other camera brands one has to waste a huge amount of time messing around with settings trying to get the best results. I've done it, even created industry leading products which showcase that I figured it out: http://brightland.com/w/downloads/filmic-skin-for-canon-c300-ii/ , https://brightland.com/w/downloads/filmic-skin-pictures-styles-for-canon-dslrs/ . Shoot me a link to someone, anyone who's done a better job and I'll be the first to congratulate them. As much as a pain in the *ss to figure out these solutions, I still classify the problem solving aspect as easy, just painful time consuming work. Which no one should have to do- these cameras should produce this quality with stock settings. And that's what ARRI does (that was my goal/target- get as close as possible to the ARRI look). I think Black Magic and Red have made amazing progress in color science in the last few years: stock color science that just works is what everyone wants. No one wants to mess with settings anymore (OK, I'm sure there's a few folks who enjoy it haha; most don't). Even Sony's $900 A6400's stock setting looks very impressive for skin tones- Sony gets it now too. Fuji also provides nice color without too much work and the GH5x have come a long way since the GH4 (my last Panasonic camera purchased).

Sure I've done some computer coding (doing some DNA coding would be fun too, just need a bucket of PCR-in-a-bottle and a bit of CRISPR and we'll have some velociraptor unicorns running around in no time lol). I've personally designed and built the entire capture and recording pipelines for video products, with millions of customers/viewers, including MySpace Music's* real-time A/V capture systems running in all browsers and both Windows and OSX (and later for a different product running in iOS, which also performed real-time audio effects on the CPU and video effects on the GPU). One of the most rewarding projects (which I thought I would get fired/not paid because I wasn't allowed to actually write code when on the client's site in the UK) was where I convinced people who didn't work for me, and were adversarial to the company who hired me (I didn't know this beforehand!), to solve problems they thought were impossible. The results were so good Microsoft's Advanced Technology Group offered me work (turned it down- don't want to live in Seattle again re: weather haha). I didn't write a single line of code, couldn't even look at the code. So what's the lesson? Believing that something can be done, even when people think it's impossible, even in 'battle', figuring it out and helping others to figure it out with you, for the common good.

If someone came to me and said, "hey John, help us build a great camera system!". The first thing I'd do is this. Short summary: let any and all team members go who make others on the team unhappy and/or project limited beliefs and constantly complain or in any way cause energetic or emotional drag on the company. The team needs to operate as a team- with constructive, problem solving thinking and the old fashioned can-do attitude! :) . Does this post annoy you? Great, you're fired or not hired haha! If you're laughing with me, about the silliness of this debate and serious about the kindness to others aspect, then you'd make a great team member for any project in any company.

Ask yourself (anyone who this applies to), why did(do) you downvote jcs's comments, what is it that made you annoyed/angry? Is it possible to disagree without getting annoyed/angry? What evidence can you provide that directly counters what jcs said?

Anyone hiring a bunch of pHD's and not getting results and hearing "it's not easy" over and over again might think about hiring different people who can actually build things that work. A lot of pHD's are pretty smart and creative, the challenge is when there's a bunch of smart and creative people in the same room, ego and competition can take over, leading to disaster (also a common problem in the video game development space: top game developers are some of the most talented software developers in the world along with some of the most underdeveloped social skills (autistic traits can be grown out of and better social skills can be learned: it's done with love, compassion, and empathy)). That's the point of the video link earlier in this post. Regarding the video- I think it's fair to give people a chance to change once they've learned what they are doing is toxic. This change must be quick- in my experience if people are going to change, they'll do it pretty fast, especially in a work environment.

So is everything easy? That would be a pretty boring reality, wouldn't it? What we can do, is remember that we can choose to feel good and be happy while working on life's challenges, in work or for fun. If projects aren't going smoothly, is everyone at least getting along, supporting each other, and having fun? If not, why not?

* I left MySpace a long long time ago, sorry to hear they recently lost a lot of user generated content. Still not at the level of shenanigans done by other social media giants (selling private data and worse).

Your accomplishments are amazing. If I had such capabilities, I sure wouldn't be wasting time posting on a forum. Best wishes and continued success.

But maybe that’s part of the fun for him... I’d imagine it is for all of us, at least to an extent. That’s why we’re here and doing it. And why we work in this business, or at least got in to it.

Wasn't cinemartin the name of that P2 Hard drive recorder that was supposed to come out in the early HVX200 Days? That also didn't come out...

What does one do after one wakes up to the truth about our civilization? Maybe there's a deeper purpose to posting on forums and social media? Sure this post is going way off topic. Maybe infinitely way off topic. It's dvxuser, the forum for filmmakers where the least popular discussions are about filmmaking, so maybe this post is fully aligned after all haha. Maybe the story is about people coming to a filmmaking forum to not talk about filmmaking. Maybe that's the joke? :)

Now back to being fully off topic: I took a couple years off from tech and soon it's time to get back to work. Prestigious work, lots of money, fame, accomplishments- are those things required for happiness? Lack of those things a cause of unhappiness? Neither. Providing value for a fair exchange of energy feels good. Not money. Not things. Good energy exchange between people, animals, trees, nature and so on. Smiles. Laughter. Family. Friendships. Creating things from nothing: physical things and idea things. Simple things. Having fun. Challenging people's thinking to help them wake up. Only some are ready. It's ok for those who choose to stay asleep- they'll wake up in good time (yeah I know what some of your are thinking lol and the thinking thinking on top of that too haha). Perhaps part of the 100th Monkey effect.

Speaking of things, I'd read a lot about a lot of things, however it was Alan Watts who changed my life and inspired me a great deal, a self proclaimed Spiritual Entertainer- so called to eliminate 'spiritual oneupmanship'. What a great way to make a living! For those ready to wake up, watch or listen to everything he had to say (just one person makes this post worthwhile). Read or listen to The Book of the Way by Lao Tzu, another man who woke up during a time when no one else was ready, yet he wrote down what he learned to wake people up thousands of years later. Thank you brother, what a wonderful gift! Buddhism and Zen are cool, however in my experience a bit complex for most people (Zen didn't make sense to me in the beginning)- there are simpler ways and I think there's been a bit of embellishment complexity added over the years that isn't helpful. Taosim and Alan Watts' lectures can be understood by all, with repeated reading and listening, you'll get it. Even if you get bored and fall asleep, keep doing it. Your unconscious mind will dig it and you'll understand it over time.

Current understanding is simplified in the 4 steps earlier in this thread (should add a note about being aware of one's breath- and breathing deeply to get in touch with one's true nature + meditation, + nutrition + exercise). Still worth studying Taoism, Buddhism, and Zen for a deeper understanding (don't focus on the embellishments). What for? Spiritual Entertainment as Allan Watts so eloquently put it.

I'm not sure what gave me more laughs; the video about the Fran or this silly picture with the happy pan bar.

Not sure of the bankruptcy laws where they are at, but I was burned by an agency a couple of years ago who knew the bankruptcy laws very well, and planned out their exit strategy with the purchase of new primary vehicles and primary residences including the purchase of a lake house using client funds. They even had me editing to deliver spots for a Friday noon cutoff, with delivery of their bankruptcy notice being delivered after I uploaded the commercials. So it doesn't surprise me to hear about the dude driving a Lambo now, since it's his primary vehicle, purchased with client deposits I assume.

Cinemartin released a number of years ago a product called Cinec. It was essentially a front end, a GUI running off of the commanline app, FFMpeg. Cinec cost a lot of money and even more if you wanted it to run on all cores of your machine. FFMpeg as many know on this board is a "free" open source encoder that runs by default on all cores of your machine.

Feast your eyes on this ...

DirectShow/WMF for Windows and QuickTime/AVFoundation for OSX are also free APIs which can do audio-video processing (built in to the OS). It's OK to sell FFMPeg in a commercial product: https://video.stackexchange.com/questions/14802/can-i-use-ffmpeg-in-a-commercial-product . Whether they paid MPEG-LA/Apple et al for codec licenses is another question (a bigger issue if they were based in the US). Note you can also directly link to the libraries that make up ffmpeg and not use the standalone tools (I've done this on Linux). Last I checked it was necessary to cross-compile for Windows on Linux as native compilation wasn't possible.

Have you built a camera ?

Ironic that we’re in a thread that’s talking about a guy who thinks he’s smarter than everyone else and brags about how easy it is to make a camera.....turns out he’s going out of buisiness.

You have zero credibility. Especially when your links to how you’d start your project do this....

Says it all really.

That was a complex link from LinkedIn’s CDN- wasn’t able to simplify it. Lately they’ve required an active LinkedIn login to access content. I tested it in a non-logged in session in a browser with no tokens before sharing it- looks like they still blocked access, thanks for trying it. Here’s the same video on YouTube:

His link worked when he first posted it. (I watched the video then which is the same one he's sharing again.)

A broken link = a lack of credibility?

Give me a break.
