Cinema EOS Announcement on 19th Jan - EOS R5C

Mostly, I'll also be using it stripped down but I'm going to treat it to a new lightweight tripod.

I'll still get a new cage, probably the small rig one with top handle. I'm definitely ordering the new CFExpress SE cards from AngelBird which are super cheap (compared to everything else). I already use these with my other cameras.

So we just did the job where paul was picking up bits (2-3 second brol shots at 50pover 25) with the r5 in a smallrig cage. It ws clearly noted that he could move much more freely than me with the c200/vlocks on a sholder rig.

I have the c200 for all sorts of grown up reasons (sun shade on monitor nd filters, long life batteries , rig to enable me to hold 5min chat shots on the shoulder)

but this job didnt need any of those things and actually I was embuggering myself with the larger camera.*

I dont like to say that becuause with my cine camera, rig and all I 'should be better'

I am suggesting (especially if you have a 'proper' a cam) that keeping the canon r5c as small as possible is a really powerful thing. OK you would nt have quite the stabilisation he had.. but he sure didnt need a rig for stable.

he just owns many lpe6 batts. no cables or usb bricks.

Maybe keep it naked (ok cage and arca plate) and then have a arca plate rig with.. etra power 5in monitor and mic holder/xlr recorder

but naked is suprisingly powerful

*there was one location filming a horse riding experience where he could keep up with naked r5 while I (miller sticks, fully build c200) could not. Sad to say but true.

"naked is surprisingly powerful" - Sam Morgan Moore

this is what I like about my weebill-s or ronin-s mirrorless set-up -- just how fast you can move with it. obviously it's not handheld, so if you want the handheld look it's not that. but if you want to reposition and shoot smoothly and rapidly and with a small footprint, it's lightning quick. it can fit into corners and I have a much wider range of shooting heights than naked. modest amount of set-up time.

longer lens changes than naked, so that's a consideration if you won't be on a single zoom for your coverage. (i get around that with multiple rigs. fx3 + a7siii on two gimbals. could be 24-70/70-180 or could be 35/85, etc. now I have an a7iv and a 3rd gimbal, going to try out the 3-camera/gimbal scenario tomorrow. fx3/a7siii are close in price to R5C. wouldn't be tremendously more expensive to go with multiple R5C's instead)

ND filters are all I miss from mirrorless cameras. I shot theater yesterday with the FX9 for my first time. lovely, that eND. although I didn't have time to figure out how to dial in the exposure target on the fly. (so, letting the ND do its auto thing, but adjusting the target brightness for particularly backlit scenes or something. had to go manual then)

I downloaded the 8K version of "Short Circuit" and played it back from my HTPC at full resolution to my 65 inch 8K Q900RB from 6 feet away. It's 8K no doubt, looks tremendous. Most notable is the clean low light, but it was faultless in every way, especially when you consider it's only 8 bit 420 h.264 mpeg4. I have never seen 8 bit look this good. I don't foresee where the next cinema cameras from Canon have anywhere to go, it's that good. I'm tempted to say DR but not really, it was well covered, unclipped, and some of these scenes were wide DR. It's from raw, so you could make it look different or to your liking, but I think they have the look they were after. Again, very clean low light, likely processed some for NR but not unfairly so. In one scene, right after the lights went out and all there was, was light from the cell phone, I briefly spotted faint horizontal banding, but it was so minimal it never caught my attention again. I watched it play through beginning to end at least 15 times.

The specs according to MediaInfo:

8192 x 3484 (2.35:1)
Codec: AVC @ Main L6
Color Space:YUV
Chroma Sub Sampling: 4:2:0
Bit depth: 8 bits
Color: BT709
Bit Rate: 200 Mb/s
Color Range: Limited (16-255)
Audio: AAC 48 Khz
Watermarked: Suprsteady

Good to hear your views on how it looks on an 8K monitor. I just saw in my MacBook pro and it looked nice. Hoping Canon makes it available soon.

Yup. Same with me in terms of my A cam which is full of monitors/video senders/timcode generators etc.Frankly, putting it on a monopod with a decent head will be the perfect quick and easy solution for 90% of my b-roll situations.

I'm told a few units in March will hit the dealers worldwide but April will be when most people get their cameras.

Angelbirds have been criticised for breaking easily in C300iii FB group. I have two CFexpress 512GB and at one of them a corner broke as well. AB replaced it and asked to send both in for firmware update. My guess is that they had a production series with faulty plastic and they changed the other card as well. I have many of AB cards, 14 SD, 6 CFast and that was the only issue so far. Customer service has an excellent reputation

I had the same issue, casing broke on a 512GB CFExpress. Angelbird replaced it quickly and without fuss. New one has had no issues so I've ordered one of their new 512GB SE cards which are amazing value for money.

On B&H, they sell multiple versions of their cards based on the camera. They all look like the same card but I wonder if some are weaker/stronger based on batch serial numbers. IDK.

Nevertheless, they have second generation versions available for preorder ("MK2").

The differences in the cards is sustained read and write speed. The new, cheaper CFexpress cards from Angelbird, the ones named 'SE', are more than fast enough for 8k RAW on the R5C.

On a related note, their newest releases are the most expensive ones with the highest sustained speeds they've ever offered, advertising compatibility with "12K+ RAW" (video and photo).

Back in the day, people used to look for hints from card manufactures on technical specifications because those companies are provided (or know about) new cameras months before the public knows about them (if not leaked), so maybe Angelbird is anticipating some upcoming new toys, although it's likely just marketing talk (though I'm not doubting their claims).

Who's turn is it to flex? Is Sony up?

I remember 2014-15, when Mitch was working for Convergent Design, there was a bit of a brouhaha about its SSD prices. On paper, they were pretty similar to the top offerings of the time but Mitch mentioned that CD's were tested and verified to record what was then an unheard of 4K Raw (off FS-700).

And others brought up the Panasonic P2 cards, which had not only bigger buffers but also RAID features built in.

And when PureDrifting got his C200, there was a bit of a kerfuffle about the CFast 2.0 cards and whether the lower priced pieces could sustain promised speeds. Some did, some didn't. The least expensive line was by ProGrade, IIRC, and they held up well. Delkin less so. Then Angelbird began to make some noise too.

The C200 is on sale and is an attractive deal @ $3500 for the body, would like feedback from C200 owners/operators if it makes more sense to buy the c200/b or the R5c? This would be mainly for interviews and conferences. I have the Canon R with couple RF lenses and used to operate the 70D and have couple EF. I wanted to stick to the RF mount and I do like the R5c but also like the ND, SDI and full size features of the C200 and can use it with my Atomos if I go for the B version. I currently mainly need 1080p and 4k, what is your take?

Ive tested my R6 vs the C200.. I dont think the c200 image is a mile better.

The C200 has everything you need to do professional work.. xlr ND.. af, sdi volts input. Scrreen not nailed to the camera.

If you want a toy for making nice files the r5c which has none of those things probably makes a 10% better file.

WIth the micro hdmi, its not really ever going to sit in a professional environment.

Wirh the r6 if you add a monitor the touch screen goes black and you cant control the af position easiy any more. these r camera are basically solo op only.

(which is of course fine .. for filming ducks)

if you get the c200A you can literally film with the body and an xlr mic - thats pretty stunning being the smallest professional package that is relible and controlable and robust.

I like the B model and say you were a gimbal op then it is the thing.. but for walkabout the A is pretty spacial.

---

I bought the r6 so I could 'pop' to an event in the city centre on the bus and do a few shots.. but in reality id take the c200 with a proper mic, proper ND and semi sensible battey life.
(i own c200, r6, and my colleague has 2 r5s)

an event.. filmed on the z6.. https://vimeo.com/527072583 this made some money.

crappy test.. c200, r6 https://youtu.be/nbnF7_5ffmk
