GH2 Cinema Anamoprphic footage and More | Evolving

Sage says they're the same exact patch, just combined with another for 720P/60P usage with the higher bitrate card.

I am, however, experiencing a totally different image after rolling back to the Drift|Sea hack. It may be a case of "virgin hack", where you would have to load another hack entirely then go back to the one you want to get it to work properly.

I am going to try it out to see, but certainly, my experiences in the areas that troubled me have nearly vanished (as far as I can see.)

Last night I rolled around my office building, street lamps are decently powerful but not super powerful, and recorded in and out of ETC mode. What I would've gotten two days ago was surely not what I got last night. At 800-1000 ISO the noise is tolerable enough to work with.

Prior to that, it was rather ridiculous.

Some more test footage. Wipes from ungraded to graded included.

Will make the file downloadable tomorrow, need to change some stuff and will replace the video.

Rig supplied by Hot Rod, by the way. I mentioned it a while back but you can't beat this thing for GH2 + PL.

Cool thanks for the footage!

A question though:

The footage from 1:45 onwards looks very different? Did you stop down or use a different setting, because it looks so much more detailed and textured - whereas everything before has a softness and chunky grain look in the shadows [the girl's skin and dress]

May have stopped down on the last three shots. Also, the second shot of the dog hangin' out is ETC mode, so it's cropped out of the sensor.

Wow - I am very impressed with ETC mode. That detail and fine grain on the close-up of the dog is pretty nice to my eyes.

Looking at transcoding solutions instead of fcp imports. Ice heard that gh2 is Rec. 709 should only be 16-235 since gh2 is 16-235.After seaquake does this change those specs? Thinking of using 5DtoRGB

Don't think. Do =D

5DtoRGB is the way to roll!

Save your avchd and go to Dpx for grade.

I am going to get the batch when it's stable

Did you manage to shoot or find any interiors or night footage?

I've been thoroughly impressed by the exteriors and daylights and outdoor lights leaking in but it's really rare to see any purely interior stuff...

I am going to get the batch when it's stable

The newest 5DtoRGB Batch (1.5.6) is stable for me now, I was getting lots of crashes with the old version. Audio's coming through consistently as well. I'm using REC601/Full range, seems to give me the flattest image and most neutral colors.

Love the beach vid Kholi! I'm a newbie as I just ordered my gh2 2 days ago and have a question - what are you using for the grading in this vid?

1.5.6 is working for most people. I've made some new fixes but I haven't submitted the update to the App Store yet (still waiting to hear back from a couple testers). The next version is gonna rock it, though!

Honestly I just broke out the fcp tools and colorista. Normally work in Redcine Pro + Davinci but these little tools are pretty sweet for quIckies.

Can't wait Thomas. You've got a believer in me!

GH2 | Driftwood seaQuake 176mb Patch
Hot Rod Cameras PL Mount (hotrodcameras.com)
Zeiss Superspeed Super16mm Zoom T2 10-100
Profile: Smooth -2 -2 -1 -2
NDS: .3, .6, .9
ISO: 400

Nothing special, it's footage that I grabbed pre hack re-install so I need to go back out and try this again. I noticed that, after I re-patched, ETC mode looked a lot cleaner than what's being shown here. However, my eyes may be playing tricks on me.

This is a very specific look. Lots of noise. I did a chroma denoise with Magic Bullet Denoiser and left the luma noise alone, as I'm not a fan of how soft the image gets when you tear noise out of it.

I am a fan, however, of the noise altogether. It's different, adds something to it.

Pretty cool to be able to get two distinctly different looks out of one camera at this price point!

Footage has been graded and is not the image right out of cam.

And, yes, I know, I have shakey hands. Try holding this camera with a zoom on it and focusing without a neckstrap! I've found a temp solution though, so next time it'll be a lot smoother.

I do have some after re-patch footage and it is definitely cleaner in the same situation. Some of it was in the other video. Looking forward to grabbing the combo again to test it out.

Hey Kholi!

So glad that you are testing the GH2. I'm wondering what your verdict is?

I've been watching from the sidelines on the GH2 (hacked). One of my concerns has been the Dynamic Range. What's your take on the DR? Any idea what the actual number is? Anywho....I appreciate your perspective.

Hmmm... DR is a very valid concern. I do think it's limited, for sure. Smooth sort of helps, and so does using post trickery but you can't really add what wasn't there in the first place, technically. On the same token, because of the compression of every DSLR, I don't think any of them fair better than the last.

It's a set of preferences: my preferences push me toward getting the right color in camera (or what looks to be) and resolving detail. The GH2 definitely nets plenty of DR for production purposes, anything else can be solved by treating it like most digital formats sub Alexa and RED should be, by under-exposing slightly and adjusting in post.

Using 5DtoRGB also helps out a ton, along with great glass. I know a lot of people say the glass doesn't make a difference, I flat-out disagree.

Right now, the only problem I want to solve is ETC mode noise and finding a zoom (or a duo) that will be fast enough and coverage a long enough range for swift production. If I could solve ETC mode noise problems, I wouldn't worry about the second issue as much at all. I was more concerned about the 4/3 sensor size... but, I've gotten over it. Even a 20mm seems plenty wide on this cam, as long as you can grab an 11-16/2.8 then it's covered.

There are other benefits, as well: shooting wide open without worrying much about the focus in a controlled environment, the size of the cam altogether, rotating LCD, nice little digital viewfinder.... list goes on. With the hack I'm able to get two distinctly different looks out of the cam just by switching ETC on, that's pretty sick.

GH2+Hack is sort of the cam to beat in my eyes, especially when you consider that the dang thing costs like 600.00 with a lens.

If Panasonic's paying attention, the GH3 could be a devastating affair for a lot of people.

Thanks for taking to to give an in-depth response, Kholi. Greatly appreciated!

Hmmm....so far, what you have said has been my evaluation up to this point. DR is a problem. (A smidge less range than say the NEX5N, but it's encouraging to hear that it's the same, generally speaking, as other cams in its category). I have seen footy everywhere that shows that its the sharpest image for under 4K, some would argue under 10K. ETC has been a weapon that I'd like to use....thanks for posting footy. I'm still on the fence really. It's not the cost of the cam, its the investment of time, lenses, and the overall platform. I think I'm just going nuts really. (...and for no good reason) The cams I have serve their purpose just fine (for the level of productions that I am working on)....but I'd love some additional resolution, sharpness, range, and low-light ability. (I'm aware that I've basically just described the FS100, lol....or better, the F3/Scarlet...maybe even the C300...lol.) My productions won't be better, but dang....eye candy is a tough addiction to break! Thanks for your input, Kholi!!!! Cheers!!! See you around!!!
