HPX250: cinelike D settings question

Panasonic's literature states that when using cinelike D gamma that the iris should be reduced to approximately "½ the normal level." Does this mean a reduction related to a f-stop level (like ½ f-stop higher) or does it mean that when viewing a white object it should register 50 IRE rather than 100 IRE? I'm still somewhat confused about this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
It basically means stop down about 1/2 stop from what you would normally shoot at. Cinelike-D on most of the cameras employs no knee compression on the highlights, so you can get blown highlights quicker if you're not paying attention and protecting them yourself.

IIRC the HPX250 is one of the cameras that does allow turning on the knee even when in Cine-D.

Thanks Barry. When I spoke to Panasonic last week and ask them the same question their email reply was "Using the waveform monitor and shooting something white, adjust the iris for peak white on the waveform to be at 50 IRE instead of 100." That seemed awful extreme to me and that's why I asked. I understand from a technical standpoint what you say and it sounds more reasonable to me. I'm wondering why Panasonic technical support would tell me something different? Any ideas?
 
Can't imagine. Setting peak white at 50 ire just means you're throwing away about half your dynamic range. I would most certainly not recommend doing that.
 
That's exactly what I thought and I couldn't imagine doing that either. But that's the way it's in Panasonic's literature. I performed a little test and sent them the results. They apologized for giving me erroneous information. Guess they don't get asked that question often. A half stop basically lowers the top IRE value down about 10 units to about 90. I can see doing this for Cinelike D to capture more definition at the top end of the scale. Since Cinelike D doesn't have a roll-off at the top this only makes sense. Thanks for the advice.
