Cineframe vs. Frame Mode on the XL1S

I would like to know, if the Cineframe mode on the new Sony cameras works the same way, as the Frame Mode on the Canon XL1S does. Does anybody know?

Re: Cineframe vs. Frame Mode on the XL1S

Only the source code to the camera firmware could give you a definite answer but two facts would seem to indicate that it is so:

1. Like XL-1 frame mode, vertical resolution is reduced
about 30% vs. interlaced mode.

2. Like the XL-1 frame mode, bright white objects have
a slight magenta fringe on the top and a slight green fringe
on the bottom, due to the green-offset method used
to create the image.

Actually this is either cased by, prism optics or lens aberrations, it has zero to do with the pixel offset.

Hope this helps,

Re: Cineframe vs. Frame Mode on the XL1S

Here is a great article (by Steve Mullen) of progressive-scanning and interlaced scanning vs. frame mode, which has one of the few accurate descriptions of the XL-1 frame mode I have seen.

http://videosystems.com/shoot/video_progressive_need_know/index.html

Looking at the diagram for frame mode scan (Fig 3), you can see that the centroid of the green samples is lower down than the red and blue samples, instead of being between the red and blue as with the interlaced scan.

Re: Cineframe vs. Frame Mode on the XL1S

I thank You all very much. But I think, the article, John Hudson pointed at, is not completely right. What Michael Pappas described, is a progressive mode, but not the Frame Mode on the XL1(S). ???
